Potsdam, NY – Senior forward Finn Cork was just a few tallies short of a triple-double for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team, but his effort was not enough as SUNY Poly came back late to claim an 83-77 win, breaking the Golden Knights' three-game winning streak.
Clarkson saw its mark evened at 3-3 on the season, while the Wildcats moved to 2-2. Clarkson has one game remaining before the Thanksgiving break, taking on crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday evening.
The first half saw each team put together a few lopsided runs with Clarkson getting a key one late to take a lead into the locker room. The Wildcats jumped out to a 12-7 advantage, only to see the Knights take the lead on an 11-2 streak thanks to eight points from Steve DeRegis. SUNY Poly went on a 9-2 run of its own to reclaim the lead, but the Knights quickly recovered and held the lead down the stretch. Braeden Burns hit a layup late to make it 38-30, and the Knights finished the half with an eight-point advantage.
At the start of the second half, Clarkson expanded its margin to double figures on several occasions, including a Finn Cork jumper-and-one to put the Knights up 13 (61-48). From that point on, however, the Wildcats started making shots from the perimeter. SUNY Poly closed the gap to four with a trio of 3-pointers and came all the way back to take the lead at 66-65 on a 3-pointer from William Scanlon with just over seven minutes to go. Although the Knights reclaimed the lead immediately after, the game remained close and was tied up at 74. From there, Anthony Rose scored a key layup-and-one with two minutes to go. An additional free throw 30 seconds later and a jumper by LaMarqus Merchant, Jr. with 50 seconds remaining had the Wildcats up by six. Though Steve DeRegis would nail a 3-pointer from the top of the key 20 some seconds later that was the last make for the Knights, and SUNY Poly made free throws down the stretch for the final tally.
Finn Cork enjoyed his biggest game of the season, producing all over the court with 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. He shot 12-for-15 overall and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Braeden Burns had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, going 8-for-13 from the field, and Steve DeRegis tossed in 14 points.
On the SUNY Poly side, Kamryn Comstock scored 24 with eight boards and three steals and Daimarr Miller added 21 points thanks to five 3-pointers. Anthony Rose also added in 17 points for the Wildcats.
