GRAND RAPIDS, MI – UW-La Crosse had four players score in double figures in a 76-59 win over Johns Hopkins on day two of the Great Lakes Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 3-2 while the Eagles improve to 4-1.
The teams went back and forth for the opening 15 minutes as neither team could take more than a three-point lead. Dustin Derousseau answered a pair of Nick Klaiber free throws with a layup to put the Eagles up 25-24 with 4:58 on the clock. Brian Johansson then drained a step-back three to grab the lead back for the Blue Jays on the ensuing possession.
Torin Hannah answered with a triple on the other end to spark a 9-0 run as UWL pushed out to a 34-27 lead with 2:42 on the clock. The teams went back to trading buckets over the remainder of the half and Wisconsin-La Crosse led 39-33 at the half.
Will Fuhrmann hit a three-pointer to open the second half to spark a 9-5 spurt as the Eagles pushed out to a 48-38 lead four minutes in. The Blue Jays came right back with a 9-3 burst to pull within four at the 13:08-mark. John Windley capped the run with the last five points for the Jays.
UWL got a pair of free throws from Derousseau, followed by three points from Khris Green, sandwiched around a Tanti Felli jumper and it was 56-49 less than three minutes later. Back-to-back Windley layups pulled Hopkins back within two at 9:02, but UWL would close the game with a 20-5 run to take the win.
Windley led the Blue Jays with his fourth 20-point game of the season as he closes in on the 1,000-point mark. Johansson posted his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Jeb Williams also finished in doubles figures, with 14 points. Derousseau paced the Eagles with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Grieger added 15 points and Fuhrmann chipped in 12 points and five boards. Green added 10 points and six rebounds.
Hopkins is back in action on Tuesday, November 26 as the Blue Jays host the Eastern Eagles. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 6:00 pm.
