Senior guard Henry Hinkle sank a 3-pointer to bring Ohio Wesleyan within a single point, but Otterbein withstood a potential game-winning possession and went on to a non-conference win over the Bishops on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Senior wing David Rice tied the game at 53 with a lay-in with 3:51 left in regulation time, but on Otterbein's ensuing possession, Julian Heckman was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and sank all 3 free throws to put the Cardinals ahead to stay.
A lay-in by junior wing Jessee Battle once again made it a 1-point game, but Otterbein got a 3-pointer from Jared Kreager with 1:45 remaining.
Hinkle answered with a 3-pointer for Ohio Wesleyan, and the Bishop defense got the stop they needed, with the ball going out of bounds off Otterbein's Troy Scowden an instant before the shot clock expired, giving the ball to the Bishops with :35 remaining, but freshman guard Quinn Hart was called for a charge with :10.1 remaining.
With Hart's foul only Ohio Wesleyan's fourth of the half, the Bishops had to foul 3 more times to send the Cardinals to the free throw line and this was accomplished, with Kreager going to the line for a one-and-one with :06.6 remaining. Kreager sank both free throws for a 61-58 lead.
Otterbein, with only 4 team fouls to that point, used the same strategy to shave time off the clock and prevent a potential game-tying 3-pointer, committing 3 fouls to send Hinkle to the line for a one-and-one with :04.2 remaining. Hinkle made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, and while Hinkle was able to get to the rebound, he stepped on the end line to give possession to the Cardinals, and Heckman was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to seal the outcome.
Hinkle closed out the first half with a 3-pointer and sank a jumper from the lane on the opening possession of the second half to give the Bishops a 28-26 lead, but the Cardinals went on a 12-0 run that included 3-pointers by Heckman and Kreager to go up, 43-32. Ohio Wesleyan rallied with an 11-2 run that saw Hinkle knock down a pair of 3-pointers and junior wing Quinn Corna add another, and the Bishops eventually pulled even on Rice's lay-in.
Hinkle led the Bishops with 27 points and 3 assists. Fifth-year post Tony Carter and senior post Phil Wallace shared the team lead with 5 rebounds apiece.
