BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (November 23) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team took down defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Geneva 65-62 for the Yellow Jackets' first win of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Waynesburg rises to 1-4 on the year and 1-1 in PAC play. Geneva, who captured last winter's PAC Tournament crown and won the conference's regular season title last year with an 18-2 league record, falls to 0-3, 0-1 PAC.
The Jackets trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half and trailed for nearly 30 minutes in the ballgame. Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) and Casey Keesee (Tipp City, Ohio / Bethel) keyed the comeback effort as each player had 14 points in the second half as Waynesburg outscored Geneva 43-31 over the final 20 minutes.
The Golden Tornadoes led by nine at the half and carried a 52-45 lead just past the midway point of the second half. Waynesburg scored the next 10 points with Keesee draining two treys in the run to go ahead 55-52 with five minutes remaining.
The game was tied at 55 and 57 before Geneva went ahead 58-57 with 3:25 to play on a three-point play. Keesee put the Jackets in front with a layup and sank his fourth three-pointer of the half on the next possession to put the Jackets ahead 62-58.
The Golden Tornadoes scored the next four points to tie the game at 62 with 1:10 left. Baker gave the Jackets their final lead of the game with a reverse layup with 40 seconds to play. Waynesburg hounded Geneva on their ensuing possession as the Golden Tornadoes used the entire shot clock and put up a heavily contested jumper that missed the mark. Korey Mitchum (McHenry, Md. / Southern Garrett (Md.)) made a free throw after grabbing the rebound and Geneva's game-tying attempt at the buzzer missed the rim as the Jackets secured their first win.
The game was competitive early as the score was tied at two, five and 10 before back-to-back three-pointers by Geneva gave the hosts a 16-10 edge. Treys by Scott Bilovus (Imperial, Pa. / West Allegheny) and Duvall Price (Lanham, Md. / St. Maria Goretti) kept the Jackets within one (19-18) with seven minutes left in the first half.
Waynesburg was held without a field goal until Jaylen Davis (Cleveland Heights, Ohio / Cleveland Heights) scored as time expired in the first half as Geneva closed the half with a 12-4 run to lead 31-22 at the break.
Baker had a season-high 17 points, nine rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocked shots. Keesee finished with 14 points, all in the second half, along with four rebounds and four assists. PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) added nine points.
Waynesburg outrebounded Geneva 44-38 and had the edge in bench points (29-15), fast break points (16-3) and second chance points (11-6). The Jackets shot 6-of-8 from deep in the second half and finished with nine made threes at 47.4 percent.
