GRAND RAPIDS, MI – John Windley scored a game-high 23 points to lead Johns Hopkins to an 84-69 win over third-ranked John Carroll at the Great Lakes Invitational Friday night. The Blue Jays improve to 3-1 on the season and hand the Blue Streaks their first loss of the season. This is Hopkins' first win over a top-five opponent since a 73-71 win at top-ranked Swarthmore on February 29, 2020.
Hopkins raced out to a 15-2 lead in the opening seven minutes with buckets from four Blue Jays and fueled by eight points from Brian Johansson. John Carroll pulled back within eight with a 6-1 spurt, including back-to-back Chase Toppin layups. The Blue Jays answered with an 8-2 run, capped by a pair of buckets from Jeb Williams as JHU led 24-10 with 7:51 to play.
The Blue Streaks got layups from Henry Raynor and Luke Chicone and then a pair of Raynor free throws sandwiched around a Tanti Felli turnaround jumper and it was 26-16 Jays at the 6:12-mark. Hopkins pushed its lead to 17 just two and a half minutes later with a 9-2 run. Four straight free throws sparked the run and then was capped with a Windley triple and a Charlie Jackson jumper.
John Carroll came right back with a quick 5-1 spurt to cut the deficit back to 13 with 1:24 on the clock, but Hopkins answered with a 9-4 run that bridged halftime to go up 45-27 early in the second. The teams went back and forth over the ensuing 12 minutes as the lead see-sawed between 19 and 14 points. Trailing 66-52 with 5:47 to play, Jack Zapolnik hit a layup to spark an 8-0 that saw the Blue Streaks slice the deficit to just six less than a minute later.
Felli scored on a driving layup, followed by a Jackson dunk and just like that the lead was back to 10. The teams went back to trading buckets for two and a half minutes and Hopkins led 76-67 with 2:12 on the clock. Johansson drained a three with just two seconds on the shot clock to spark an 8-0 run that saw the Blue Jays push their lead to 17 just 71 seconds later. Zapolnik hit two free throws with 44 seconds to play, but they were the only John Carroll points in the final two minutes.
Windley turned in his third 20-point game of the season and now has 917 points in his career. He also handed out a game and career-high eight assists. Williams finished with a career-high 19 points to go with seven boards. Johansson also finished in double figures with 16 points. Jackson had a game-high eight rebounds and added nine points and four assists. Will Yontek led John Carroll with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Raynor finished with 12 points. Toppin and Luke Frazier chipped in 10 points each for the Blue Streaks.
Hopkins returns to action at the Great Lakes Invitational on Saturday versus UW-La Crosse. Tip-off at Van Noord Arena is slated for 3:00 pm.
