Five Cardinals Reach Double Figures in Landmark-Opening Victory

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Catholic outscored Elizabethtown 48-35 in the second half to earn an 89-71 road victory in its Landmark Conference opener on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals improve to 3-1 in the early season while the Blue Jays drop to 2-2. 

Sean Neylon led five Cardinals in double figures, scoring 20 points on an efficient 8-12 shooting. Neylon knocked down four triples as Catholic shot 10-21 from behind the three-point line. He was joined in double digits by Brian Herbert (16), Ethan Hinds (13), CJ Ruoff (11), and Dan Buckley (10). 

The Cardinals were red-hot from the field in Wednesday night's affair, making 58.6 percent of its shots, 47.6 percent of its threes, and all 11 of its free throw attempts. 

Catholic trailed 22-18 with 10:09 remaining in the first half after Elizabethtown's Augie Brody knocked down a three. The Cardinals went on a 9-0 to take a 27-22 lead over the next three-plus minutes with Neylon hitting a three to make it 25-22. The Cardinals took an eight-point lead on a Hinds layup with 3:01 to play in the opening half before taking a 41-36 lead into the break. 

Catholic opened the second half on a 15-4 run, building the lead to 16 on a Jamie Ntiamoah layup with 16:15 to play in the contest. The Blue Jays pulled within 11 with 11:24 remaining, but Ntiamoah, Buckley, and Ruoff all hit layups to push the lead back to 17 with 9:13 on the clock. 

Neylon's three-pointer with 5:58 to play pushed the lead to 20 points for the first time and the lead grew as high as 27 with 2:36 to play before Elizabethtown ended the night on a 9-0 run to pull the gap back inside 20 points. 

QUICK HITTERS

  • Neylon's 20-point performance gives him back-to-back games with 20 or more points and puts him over 600 career points as a Cardinal. Adding in his time as a member of the Ursinus Bears, Neylon is just 79 points shy of 1,000 for his career. 
  • Herbert has scored 12 or more points in every game so far this season and is averaging 14.5 points per game, up from 9.0 last year. 
  • 13 points sets a new career-high for Hinds who is averaging 8.0 points per game off the bench in 2024. 
  • With nine rebounds tonight, Ntiamoah is averaging 8.5 rebounds per contest as he has corralled nine or more boards in three of four contests. 
  • Shooting a perfect 11-11 at the line, Catholic shoots 100 percent from the charity stripe on 10 or more attempts for the first time since December of 2022 when they shot 12-12 against Southern Virginia. 

Catholic will remain on its early season road stretch with a trip to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on the Wilkes Colonels on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
