PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's basketball team fell to St. Lawrence at home in non-conference action, falling 66-56 on Tuesday night. Senior guard Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) led the way for the Cardinals with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Franklin Infante (East Rockaway, N.Y. / East Rockaway) and Nate Pondexter Jr. (Washington, D.C. / Archbishop Carroll) both had solid nights for the Cardinals with nine and eight points respectively while Infante had four rebounds and Pondexter Jr. had six. Other contributions came from Irwayne Connell Jr. (Brooklyn, N.Y. / National Christian Academy) and Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) who recorded seven and six points respectively and both tallied four rebounds. Junior guard/forward Damari Johnson (Binghamton, N.Y. / Johnson City) recorded his first points as a Cardinal with three on the night to go with two rebounds and a block.
For the Saints, Adam Dudzinski led all players in scoring with 21 to go with nine rebounds. Aidan Macaulay and Troy McPherson had 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Saints had a solid shooting night shooting 40.0% from the field while the Cardinals shot 35.0%. The Saints shot four more free throws than the Cardinals going 15 of 22 from the line at 68.2% while the Cardinals were 10 of 18 at 55.6%. The Cardinals had the slight edge in rebounds 39 to 38 while both teams had 14 turnovers. The Cardinals recorded 14 points off turnovers while the Saints only had four.
Plattsburgh State falls to 1-2 with the loss and next travels to Middlebury on Monday, Nov. 25 for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Panthers. St. Lawrence moves to 2-1 with the win and next travels to Geneseo on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.
Smith opened the scoring in the first half while Dudzinksi got the Saints on the board followed by a three from Infante that made the score 5-2 Cardinals at the 17:39 mark. The Saints took their first lead after Dudzinski drained a three-pointer and made the score 7-5. After McPherson and Sasha Vidrini (Trieste, Italy / Liceo Rogazionisti) exchanged threes the score was 12-11 Saints at the 12:13 mark. Back-to-back layups from the Saints made the score 19-13 however the Cardinals responded with back-to-back baskets of their own and made the score 19-17 with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Cardinals regained the lead after two made free throws from Pondexter Jr., but the Saints quickly responded with a layup from Macaulay that made the score 24-23 Saints. After Connell Jr. got an extra possession for the Cardinals off the offensive rebound and made the tip-in layup, McPherson scored a layup right before the end of the half and made the score 28-27 Saints at halftime.
Macaulay opened the second half with a three followed by a layup from Ikechukwu Ezike (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Paul Robeson) that made the score 31-29 Saints. A Plattsburgh 7-0 burst gave the Cardinals the lead momentarily at 40-38 before Patrick Mulholland tied the game at 40 on a midrange jumper at the 11:25 mark. After back-and-forth action, five straight points from the Saints made the score 48-43 Saints with less than seven minutes remaining. An 8-0 run from the Saints extended their lead to 56-45 at the 4:35 mark. While a Pondexter Jr. layup ended the run, another Saints run made the score 62-48 and powered them to a 66-56 victory.
