No. 23 Hampden-Sydney Wins On The Road At No. 5 Christopher Newport 74-71

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Fifth-year All-American guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half, to lead nationally-ranked No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College to a 74-71 non-conference road win at No. 5 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday night in Newport News. Junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) added his first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the visiting Tigers, who led 33-25 at halftime and improved to 3-0 on the season. Toa Hollenbeck scored 19 points for the Captains, who dropped to 4-1.

"Gutsy road win tonight," sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "It took us a while to find our groove, but I'm proud of the guys for sticking together and finding a way to get it done. A lot we will learn from this one."

H-SC yielded the opening points of the contest to CNU in the Top 25 contest before senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) connected on the first of his three first-half three-point field goals for a 3-2 advantage at the 16:00 mark. It was tied at 5-5 after a turnaround jumper in the lane by junior guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) at 14:26, and it was tied at 8-8 following a three-pointer out top left of the circle by Radcliffe at 12:11. Fernald got in on the action from three-point territory with a triple of his own at 10:08 for an 11-8 lead. It was tied at 11-11 before the Tigers used a 14-6 run to take a 25-17 advantage with 5:19 left in the half after two free throws by senior guard Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC), getting two more three-pointers from McGowan during the run, as well. The Garnet & Grey took their largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at 33-22 on a pair of free throws by Radcliffe at 1:26, and the visitors led 33-25 at halftime.

CNU scored the first six points of the second half and was within 33-31 at 17:24 after a three-pointer by Hollenbeck. H-SC responded with a quick 9-2 run to lead 42-33 with 14:48 on the clock, getting a layup from Shryock, a step-back three-pointer by Brazil, a jumper from McGowan and a turnaround jumper in the lane by Brazil. The Tigers led 50-40 at 10:58 following two free throws from junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville), but the Captains rallied back and were within 55-53 with 7:03 left to play after a jumper by Tyson Henderson. Brazil made a floater in the lane to start a 12-2 run that he closed with consecutive three-pointers for a 67-55 advantage with 3:52 remaining. A basket inside from Fernald made it 69-59 at 2:47, and a layup by Brazil made it 71-63 with 59-seconds on the clock—and a steal by Brazil led to a pair of free throws by freshman guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD that had the Garnet & Grey ahead 73-63 with 41-seconds left to play. The home team made it interesting by outscoring the visitors 8-1 over the final 36-seconds to provide for the final margin.

Brazil led No. 23 H-SC with his game-high 22 points, including 3-7 three-pointers, adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Fernald finished with his first career double-double of 14 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Tigers. McGowan contributed a season-high 11 points, including 3-6 three-pointers, while Campbell had nine points off the bench, including 7-8 free throws. Radcliffe had seven points and three rebounds, and Shryock had six points, six rebounds and two steals. H-SC shot 41% (24-59) from the field, including 50% (9-18) on three-pointers, and 68% (17-25) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 23-12 advantage in points off turnovers, and a 19-8 advantage in bench points.

Hollenbeck led No. 5 CNU with his 19 points, including 4-9 three-pointers. Henderson finished with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Captains, while Ethan Ward contributed 12 points and nine rebounds. All-American Jahn Hines had six points and a game-high 12 rebounds. CNU shot 40% (27-67) from the field, including 30% (8-27) on three-pointers, and 45% (9-20) at the line.

H-SC will host the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament sponsored by Elder, Watkins, Friedman & Allen, P.C. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23. The Tigers will play Pfeiffer (NC) University on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Fleet Gym and either (RV)Gettysburg (PA) College or No. 20 Maryville (TN) College on Saturday, Nov. 22, at either 2:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. Gettysburg and Maryville play on Friday, Nov. 22, at 5:30 p.m.
