Waynesburg tangles with unbeaten Oberlin in home opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (November 16) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team pushed unbeaten Oberlin but ultimately fell 67-58 in the Yellow Jackets' home open at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Waynesburg falls to 0-3 on the year while Oberlin rises to 4-0.

After a first half in which neither team led by more than two possessions, the Yeoman converted back-to-back three-pointers to lead 36-29 four minutes into the second half. A successful three-point play by PJ Suggs (Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg) tied the game at 41 with 11:54 left in the first half.

Antone Baker (Maple Heights, Ohio / Maple Heights) gave Waynesburg a 45-44 edge with a putback midway through the second half. Oberlin responded with a 9-1 spurt to lead by seven (53-46).  

Suggs and Grant Barnhart (St. Mary's, W.Va. / St. Mary's) drained threes to bring the margin to 56-54 with five minutes remaining. However, the Jackets were held without a field goal until the final seconds as Oberlin closed the contest with a 9-2 run to remain unbeaten on the season.

The first half saw Oberlin lead by five (5-0) and Waynesburg by four (18-14) as the teams had five ties and six lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. The Yeomen led 25-23 at the half.

Suggs had 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Baker finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Jalen Goins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) added eight points. 

Waynesburg had a 30-26 advantage in points in the paint and outscored the Oberlin bench 15-10.

The Jackets begin Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play at Grove City on Wednesday evening.
