SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Junior transfer guard and first-year team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) scored a game-high and career-high 27 points off the bench, including five three-point field goals, while fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) added 17 points and a game-high six assists, to lead nationally-ranked No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College to an 81-64 season-opening and non-conference road win at (RV)Swarthmore College on Saturday evening in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Junior forward and first-year team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) had 13 points and a game-high six rebounds as the visiting Tigers led 45-30 at halftime and improved to 1-0 to begin the season. The host Garnet were led by Caleb Aurelien with 12 points and dropped to 0-1. The Garnet & Grey will return home to host archrival and No. 7 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday night, November 13, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.
"Great road test today," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We know we have some offensive firepower with this group, but we were especially proud of the way we competed defensively. We will learn a lot from this one."
H-SC yielded the opening basket of the contest to Swarthmore before using a quick 17-5 run to lead 17-7 at 13:17. Fernald started the outburst with a three-pointer and layup, before Brazil added a jumper, followed by a layup and an old-fashioned three-point play from freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC) off the bench, along with a three-pointer and layup by Radcliffe. The Tigers extended the advantage to 30-12 at 7:42 on a layup from freshman guard Asa Williams (Buford, GA) off the bench, finishing a 13-7 run that included another three-pointer by Radcliffe, who then added two more three-pointers as the visitors took their largest lead of the half at 41-17 with 4:35 remaining in the first half. The Garnet outscored their visitors 13-4 to close the first 20 minutes, but the Garnet & Grey still led 45-30 at halftime.
Swarthmore managed to close to within 49-37 with 17:26 left to play, but that was as close as the home team would get. H-SC maintained a comfortable double-digit margin throughout the second half, leading 57-41 at 13:30 following a three-point play by junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville), who was fouled on a jumper for the and one, and he added an offensive rebound basket with 11:32 on the clock for a 62-45 advantage. Sophomore guard William Britt (Richmond) added a layup at 8:53 for a 66-48 lead, and five quick points from Brazil made it 71-55 with 6:46 on the clock. Fernald added a layup at 2:57 for a 77-62 lead, and Radcliffe's fifth three-pointer of the contest in the final minute made it 81-62 toward the final 17-point margin of victory.
Radcliffe led H-SC with his game-high and career-high 27 points, making a very efficient 10-12 field goals, including 5-7 three-pointers, and 2-3 free throws in 22 minutes. Brazil finished with 17 points, a game-high six assists and four rebounds for the Tigers. Fernald contributed 13 points and a game-high six rebounds. John Campbell had nine points, while Hamilton Campbell had five points and game-highs of six assists and two steals. H-SC shot 55% (34-62) from the field, including 35% (7-20) on three-pointers, and 55% (6-11) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 44-22 advantage in points scored in the paint, and a 45-28 advantage in bench points, while out-rebounding their opponent 37-26.
Aurelien led Swarthmore with his 12 points, adding four rebounds. Eddie Paquette finished with 11 points, including 3-7 three-pointers, and five rebounds for the Garnet. Swarthmore shot 43% (21-49) from the field, including 31% (8-26) on three-pointers, and 74% (14-19) at the line.
