No. 21 Hope falls to Anderson on a late jumper

The No. 21-ranked Hope College men's basketball team dropped an 80-78 heartbreaker to Anderson University (Indiana) in a rematch of last season's NCAA Division III tournament opener.

In a game with 16 lead changes and 13 tie scores, Anderson rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit to get a go-ahead jumper in the paint from Bryce Williams in the closing seconds.

The Flying Dutchmen missed a 3-pointer at the top of the key as time expired in an electric home opener at DeVos Fieldhouse.

Led by Carter Collins '17, a former student assistant at Hope under head coach Greg Mitchell, Anderson avenged a 95-79 first-round loss last March.

Senior center Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) finished with 20 points, buoyed by 8-10 shooting from the stripe. Quillan also nabbed nine boards, two assists and two blocks.

Senior guard Josh Decker (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) played his best game in a Dutchmen uniform to date, also dropping 20 on the Ravens with three 3s and a perfect 7-7 shooting from the line.

Anderson was led in scoring by Tate Ivanyo, who posted a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Ivanyo played 37 minutes of the contest and went 5-12 from 3-point range.

With 4:32 left in the game, the Ravens enjoyed their largest lead yet at 73-66 after scoring seven unanswered points.

Three free throws and a 3-point shot helped the Flying Dutchmen overcome the absences of starting guard Marcus Wourman (injury) and starting forward Parker Hovey (illness) and pull back within one.

Junior Justice Mims (Rochester Hills, Michigan / Rochester Adams) knocked down a jumper to take back the lead, 74-73, the icing on an 8-0 Dutch run.

In the final two minutes of play the lead switched hands four times. With 36 seconds to play, senior Gabe Quillan (Ada, Michigan / Grand Rapids Catholic Central) tied the score at 78 with an emphatic dunk.

The Ravens took the ball up the court where they quickly called timeout to draw up their best play. The ball found its way to Williams, who dribbled away the clock before making a move at the top of the arc and dropping in a floater with six seconds of play left.

The Flying Dutchmen attempted two inbounds plays after a timeout to advance the ball. The first resulted in a Decker 3-point shot being batted out of bounds.

On the game's final play, an inbounds play found senior Eli Schoonveld (Zeeland, Michigan / Holland Christian), whose last-gasp 3-point shot hung in the air for a few breathless seconds before caroming harmlessly off the backboard. Schoonveld finished with eight points.

Hope will play next on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. at Wilmington College (Ohio). The Flying Dutchmen won the first and only meeting 92-68 last year.

The Flying Dutchmen will now head to the road for a long conquest of seven consecutive away games.
