How it Happened
The stage was set for reigning Division III powerhouse Randolph-Macon and up-and-coming Hood after both took care of business in their respective semifinal games. The Yellow Jackets seemed ready to prove their preseason ranking right, jumping out to a 9-2 lead early on, but two quick layups and a trio of free throws from the Blazers tied things at nine.
Randolph-Macon took back the lead shortly after, but Hood made sure to stay in reach the whole time, taking their first lead with a Robinson three-pointer with just under 11 minutes in the half.
The Blazers kept their foot on the gas the rest of the half, pumping their lead up to 36-27 with two minutes left when Garrison Linton (New Market, Md./Oakdale) blew past the Yellow Jackets' defense and hit a contested layup. The visitors were determined to go into the half with momentum though, scoring the next four points and trim Hood's lead to 36-31 after the first 20 minutes.
Out of the half, Hood stopped Randolph-Macon's first possession before Robinson drew a foul driving to the basket, finishing his layup and making the free throw for the unconventional three-point play..
The Blazers' lead teetered around 10 until a deep three from Troy Fulton (Denver, N.C./Lincoln Charter School) ignited something fierce in them, as they began to drain shot after shot, culminating in a Linton steal and long ball to push Hood's lead to its height at 63-41 with 10:31 left in the game.
After that onslaught, the Yellow Jackets began to claw their way back, cutting the Blazers' lead to eight at 78-70 with just over a minute left, but Hood kept the offensive pressure up and forced Randolph-Macon to foul them, making enough free throws to maintain a comfortable lead. Yarbrough made two more free throws with 15 seconds left to get the crowd on their feet as the buzzer sounded to finalize their first victory over the perennial powerhouse.
