CWRU's Trunley Scores School-Record 43; Rashid Hits Winning Shot in Double-OT in 101-99 Win over Brockport

Case Western Reserve University senior guard Sam Trunley set a school record with 43 points on Saturday and senior forward Umar Rashid connected on the game-winning shot to lead the Spartans to a 101-99 win in double overtime over SUNY Brockport to win the Bill Sudeck Tournament at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

CWRU improved to 2-0 with the win, while Brockport fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Trunley's 43 points surpassed the previous federated program's single-game record of 39 points, set by Funso Lafe against Westminster in 2005. He finished the game shooting 11-of-17 from the floor, including three-of-seven from long range and made 17-of-18 free throw attempts. He added 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the year.

Graduate student guard Wade Jackson added 28 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals, shooting nine-of-22 overall. Rashid tallied a career-best 16 rebounds and added five blocks and 12 points for the double-double.

Trunley was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Rashid, along with Tony Arnold of Brockport, Dwayne Jones of Penn State Altoona, and Bryon Streb of SUNY Canton.

Saturday's game was a thriller with the Spartans and the Golden Eagles remaining within six points of each other throughout the first half. CWRU took a 39-36 lead into halftime, but Brockport took the lead early in the second half and built a 10-point lead, 69-59, with under six minutes left in the game. However, CWRU responded with a 12-0 run to regain the lead with 2:46 left in regulation. A key stretch game with 3:52 remaining in the game and the Spartans trailing 69-63, as Trunley drew a foul on a layup attempt, and a technical foul on the play gave CWRU four straight free throws and the ball. Trunley converted all four free throws and Rashid hit a layup off the inbound pass, giving the Spartans a six-point swing in just four seconds. CWRU took its first lead since the 16:16 mark of the second half on a free throw by Jackson with 3:10 remaining and held a two-point lead, 75-73, on two more free throws by Jackson with 32 seconds to go. However, Arnold was fouled on Brockport's final possession and hit both free throws to tie the game with nine seconds left, and a last-chance shot by Trunley missed the mark to send the contest to overtime.

CWRU fell behind 81-77 with 2:49 remaining in the first overtime period but went on a 9-0 run, including six points from Trunley, to take an 86-81 lead with 45 seconds left. CWRU was still up by two points in the closing seconds of the first overtime, but a two-point shot at the edge of the arc by Arnold as time experience extended the game to a second overtime frame.

It remained a one-possession game throughout the second overtime but two free throws by Trunley with 1:27 on the clock turned a one-point deficit into a 98-97 lead. He added another free throw with 43 seconds left to give CWRU a two-point lead. Brockport's Alex Tavarez hit a two on the Golden Eagles' next possession to tie the game with 24 seconds to go. However, on the Spartans' final possession, Rashid took an inbound pass from the sideline, dribbled through the key and around a Brockport defender, sinking a fadeaway jumper to give CWRU the lead with 0.5 seconds left.

Brockport could not get a final shot off, as the Spartans held on for the two-point win and tournament championship.

Fourteen of Trunley's 43 points came during the two overtime periods. He tied the program record with a layup with 3:34 to go in the second overtime.

The Spartans will look to keep the momentum going when the team hosts La Roche University at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13
