Ohio Northern edged 59-57 at Gettysburg (Pa.) in championship game of Gettysburg Tip-Off Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Ohio Northern men's basketball team fell in the championship game to host Gettysburg (Pa.) 59-57 at the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.

The Basics

  • Records: Ohio Northern (1-1 Overall), Gettysburg (2-0 Overall).

The Game

  • Senior Will Miller (Ottovile) led the team with 13 points and added 2 assists and 2 rebounds to go with it.
  • Sophomore Theo Magg. (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) finished with 10 points also grabbing 6 rebounds.
  • Sophomore Jadi Cunningham (Columbus/ Westerville South) added eight points, snagged five rebounds and had seven assists.
  • Junior Mason Studer (Galion/Colonel Crawford) and sophomore Carter Reese (Columbus/Westerville North) both scored six.
  • Carl Schaller led Gettysburg with 13 points.
  • Magg would cut the Polar Bear deficit to 57-58 on a layup assisted by Cunningham. 
  • The Polar Bears would have the ball with 26 seconds left to take the lead down 58-57 after a defensive hold.
  • Northern had two shots to take the lead but neither would fall ,ultimately leading to the Bullets sinking one last free throw to ice the game. 
  • Ohio Northern was 23-of-56 from the floor for 41.1 percent and made 5-23 three-pointers for 21.7 percent, while Gettysburg finished 24-of-61 from the field for 39.3 percent and 9-of-22 from three-point range for 40.9 percent.
  • ONU made 6-of-7 free throws for 85.7 percent and GC was 2-of-4 from the foul line for 50.0 percent.
  • The Bullets out-rebounded the Polar Bears 37-35.

Notables

  • This is Ohio Northern's second time playing in the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament, winning the tournament in 2011-12.
  • Sophomores Cunningham and Reese were both named to the All-Tournament Team
  • The all-time series with Gettysburg is now tied 1-1. ONU topped GC 71-70 on Nov. 18, 2011.
  • Ohio Northern continues its 114th season of varsity men's basketball and has a record of 1372-1077, a winning percentage of .560.
  • Head coach Neal Young is in his fourth season at Ohio Northern with a 24-28 record.
