ARLINGTON, VA – John Windley scored a game-high 24 points to lead Johns Hopkins to a 75-69 win at Marymount in the season opener Friday night. The Blue Jays open the season with a win for the second straight year.
Marymount grabbed an early 11-6 lead after a Joshua Hughes triple and back-to-back Reuben McEachern buckets. Hopkins responded with an 8-2 spurt, fueled by three-pointers from Logan Feller and Tanti Feller to go up 14-13 at the 11:08-mark. The Saints then used a methodical 12-6 spurt to go up 25-20 four minutes later. Winston Moore capped the spurt with a jumper at the 7:16-mark.
The Blue Jays pulled back within two just 90 seconds later on a Wyatt Eglinton Manner trey and a pair of Will Stevenson free throws. The Saints pushed their lead to nine, the largest of the half, with seven unanswered points and led 34-25 late in the half.
Charlie Jackson sparked an 11-2 Hopkins run that knotted the score at 46 with 1:04 on the clock. Jackson and Windley combined for all 11 Blue Jay points, that included a three-pointer from each of them. Winston Moore put the Saints back on top with a turnaround jumper with 55 ticks on the clock. Windley answered with a driving layup to make it a 38-38 game at the half.
After trading buckets to open the second half, Jeb Williams drained a pair of free throws to ignite a 10-0 Hopkins' run. Windley hit a bucket from downtown to put the punctuation on the run and stake the Blue Jays to a 50-40 lead with 15:28 to play. The Saints came right back with an 11-4 run that trimmed the deficit to just three at 54-51 with 9:08 on the clock.
Twice over the ensuing four minutes, Hopkins led by 11 but Marymount answered both times. The Blue Jays led 65-60 with 2:46 to play in the game and they would seal the game at the free throw line. Hopkins would go 10-of-12 from the line from Windley, Jackson, Brian Johanssson and Williams.
Windley's 24 points are two shy of his career high as he also pulled six rebounds and a career-best four steals. Jackson added a career-high 17 points to go with six boards. Felli also finished in double figures, with a career-best 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Marcus Stubbs led the Saints with 15 points, while Isaac Harris scored 13 and Miles Phillips scored 10.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, November 12 as the Blue Jays host the York Spartans. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 7:30 pm.
