No. 1 Hampden-Sydney (#2 Seed) Defeats #4 Seed Washington and Lee 81-56 For Record-11th ODAC Tournament Championship!

SALEM, Va. -- Senior team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high and career-high 27 points with five three-point field goals, while classmate Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds, to lead nationally-ranked No. 1 Hampden-Sydney College to an 81-56 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Championship win past Washington and Lee University on Sunday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center in Salem. Senior team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) finished with a season-high 15 points for the #2 seed Tigers, who took control early with a 19-1 run and led 43-25 at halftime, while improving to 26-2 overall. Brazil (Tournament Most Outstanding Player), Hubbard and Hardy were each named to the All-Tournament Team. The #4 seed Generals dropped to 18-10 and were led by Drew Harrell with 15 points. H-SC won its record-11th ODAC Tournament title, while playing in its record-16th championship game, as the Tigers improved to 63-35 all-time in the conference tournament—the most wins in the event, as well.

"This is a special group of young men and we are so thankful that we got to share this moment together," said fifth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "So many Tiger faithfuls came out to support to make this a day we will remember forever. Going to enjoy this one, but we have more work to do with this group!"

H-SC and W&L were tied early at 5-5 just under two minutes into the contest as each team traded a jumper and three-pointer, respectively—Hubbard and Hardy (with the rare triple) for the Tigers. Brazil then connected on back-to-back three-pointers, followed by another from Hubbard, along with layup by Hubbard for 11 unanswered points toward a game-changing 19-1 run and a 24-6 advantage with 11:39 on the first-half clock. The Generals answered back with a 9-2 run to close to within 26-15 at 7:25, but the Garnet & Grey responded with consecutive baskets by fifth-year Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) to lead 30-15 with 5:33 left in the opening half. Brazil then scored seven-straight points, including a deep three-pointer from straight-away, to push the margin to 40-21 at 1:33 toward the 43-25 halftime margin.

H-SC led 48-31 early in the second half after a strong drive to the basket by Clements, who was fouled and converted the conventional three-point play at 14:50. The Tigers extended their advantage to 56-36 with 10:16 remaining as Hubbard scored on a two-handed slam dunk on a fast break lob pass from Clements, and it was 59-36 at 8:36 after another three-pointer by Brazil in the right corner, and Brazil followed his own miss with a baseline jumper to make it 61-38 with 8:14 on the clock. W&L tried making a final push and was within 61-46 at 7:31 following a pair of three-pointers during a quick 8-0 run, but that was as close as it would get … Hubbard ended the run with another three-pointer of his own, followed by two free throws from Brazil, a step-back jumper by fifth-year Chase Turner (Virginia Beach), and another basket inside from Hardy for a 70-48 lead at 5:27. Brazil's final three-pointer from between the circles made it 75-56 at 1:56, and the Garnet & Grey closed with 1-2 free throws by Clements, a three-pointer off the glass from sophomore Davis Cauble (Richmond) (off the bench) and 2-2 free throws by senior Shawn Hodge (Charlotte, NC) (off the bench).

Brazil led H-SC with his game-high and career-high 27 points, including five three-pointers, adding five rebounds and two assists to earn Tournament MOP honors. Hubbard finished with his 18 points and game-high nine rebounds for the Tigers, tying his career-high with a game-high four blocks, as well, along with two assists. Hardy contributed his season-high 15 points, including just the fourth three-pointer of his career. Clements had eight points, along with game-highs of four assists and three steals. Senior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) added eight rebounds as the Garnet & Grey out-rebounded the Generals 47-33. H-SC shot 44% (30-68) from the field, including 35% (9-26) on three-pointers, and 71% (12-17) at the free throw line.

Harrell led W&L with his 15 points. Jack d'Entremont and Robert DiSibio each had 11 points for the Generals, and d'Entremont added a game-high nine rebounds, as well. W&L shot 36% (20-55) from the field, including 29% (7-24) on three-pointers, and 56% (9-16) at the line.

H-SC was playing in the title contest for the first time since 2014, and the Tigers had last won a conference tournament championship in 2007 (defeating Roanoke 77-62).

The NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Selection Show is on Monday, February 26, at 1 p.m., and H-SC is expected to be the overall #1 seed in the tournament field. The College will be hosting a Watch Party on-campus at The Tiger Inn for all students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public.
