#13 CWRU Remains in UAA Driver’s Seat with 99-70 Win over Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team remained in control of its own destiny for the 2023-24 University Athletic Association with a 99-70 win over the University of Rochester at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans proved to be the better squad on either court, completing the season sweep of the Yellowjackets for the first time ever to improve to 9-4 in UAA play and to 20-4 overall. With one game remaining in the regular season, the Spartans remained tied atop the conference with NYU and can clinch at least a share of their second-straight UAA Championship with a win in their regular-season finale at home against Carnegie Mellon next Saturday.

Rochester fell to 10-14 overall and to 4-9 in the UAA with the loss.

CWRU was led in the game by graduate student guards Anthony Mazzeo and Preston Maccoux, and graduate student forward Colin Kahl, who combined to score 65 points in the game. Mazzeo finished with a team-high 24 points, shooting nine-of-20 from the floor with three rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Maccoux came off the bench to score 21 points for his second 20-point effort in the last three games and third overall this season, shooting eight-of-12 overall and four-of-seven from behind the three-point line. Kahl added 20 points and a team-high nine rebounds with an assist, two steals, and a block.

Junior guard Sam Trunley added 12 points off the bench in the game, helping the Spartans' bench outscore the Yellowjackets' 44-15 in the game.

The Spartans found themselves trailing 16-12 with 13:09 left in the first half but responded with an 11-0 run, including seven points from Maccoux, to go ahead 23-16 and force a Rochester timeout and switch to a full-court press defense with 10:43 to play. CWRU's lead grew to eight points after a jumper by Kahl with 9:21 left that set the score to 25-17, but the Yellowjackets eventually tied the score at 32-32 with 4:33 left in the half, but graduate student guard Richie Manigault answered with a three to give CWRU the lead back. The three started a stretch of seven-straight points for the Spartans that saw the team take a 39-32 lead with 2:35 to go in the frame. CWRU built its lead to nine points, 46-37, on a three by Mazzeo with 1:09 on the clock, but Rochester scored the final three points of the period to cut the Spartans' lead to 46-40 by halftime.

Mazzeo and Maccoux each scored 11 points to lead the Spartans during the opening half, as the team connected on 55.9% (19-34) shots during the first 20 minutes of action.

Rochester was able to get back within three points by the 16:41 mark, but an 8-0 run by the Spartans extended the team's lead to 11 points, 59-48, by the 13:44 mark. CWRU maintained a double-digit lead for most of the remainder of the game and expanded its lead to as many as 31 points in the closing minute before coming away with a 29-point win.

CWRU finished the game shooting 54.4% overall (37-68) and 36.0% (9-25) on three-point attempts, while holding Rochester to 41.3% (26-63) overall and 21.1% (4-19) from long range. Rochester's Tomiwa Adetosoye led all scorers in the game with 25 points.

The Spartans will look to clinch at least a share of the 2023-24 UAA Championship next weekend when the team plays host to the Tartans at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24. Before the contest, CWRU will also honor its eight players who will be appearing in the final regular season with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony.
