No. 2 Hampden-Sydney Rolls On The Road At (RV) Virginia Wesleyan 71-47

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 22 points to lead nationally-ranked No. 2 Hampden-Sydney College to a 71-47 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at (RV) Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night in Virginia Beach. Classmates Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) and Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) each finished with 10 points as the visiting Tigers closed the first half on a 33-14 run to lead 39-25 at halftime, while improving to 22-2 overall, and finishing 14-2 in the ODAC to secure—at least—the second seed for next week's ODAC Tournament in Salem. The victory was also the 100th collegiate coaching win for fifth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough, his 74th with the Tigers, since taking over on April 4, 2019. The host Marlins, getting votes in this week's national poll, were led by Amarion Wilson with 15 points and dropped to 17-7 overall, 8-7 in the ODAC. H-SC will complete the regular season at home on Saturday, February 17, at 2 p.m. versus the University of Mary Washington in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House.

"Great way to end the regular season ODAC play tonight against a tough opponent," said Kimbrough. "The guys were focused and together. Proud of this group!"

H-SC, ranked first in Region VI of the all-important NCAA Division III Regional Rankings, and second in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, fell behind 11-6 early at VWU, fourth in the region and getting votes nationally. The Tigers, however, got rolling and outscored the Marlins 33-14 over the final 13:50 of the first half to lead comfortably at halftime. Brazil jump-started the outburst with 10-straight points for the Garnet & Grey, including a pair of three-point field goals, for a 16-13 advantage at 11:51, and consecutive jumpers by Brazil made it a 28-18 lead with 6:15 on the first-half clock. The two jumpers started a quick 15-5 run with points from Hubbard (4), sophomore Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3, off the bench), Hardy (2) and fifth-year team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (2, off the bench), as well, for a 39-22 advantage toward the 39-25 halftime margin.

H-SC led 43-27 early in the second half at 17:51 after 1-2 free throws by fifth-year Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (off the bench) and another three-pointer from Brazil, and the lead was 48-33 at 14:48 following a three-pointer by senior Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA). The Marlins were within 50-39 with 11:11 remaining, but the Tigers used a quick 11-2 run to lead 61-41 at 5:33, capped by a two-handed slam dunk by fifth-year Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) on a fast break—assisted by Brazil. Hubbard scored twice down low, while Brazil added a jumper and junior Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) added three points. Brazil connected on his fourth three-pointer for a 68-45 lead at 2:35, before a late basket by Hardy and 1-2 free throws from Fernald secured the final margin.

Brazil led H-SC with his game-high 22 points, including 4-9 three-pointers, while adding game highs of three assists and three steals, as well. Hardy and Hubbard each finished with their respective 10 points for the Tigers, with Hardy adding four rebounds and two steals, and Hubbard adding five rebounds. Turner contributed nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Clements and Fernald each had six points, with Clements adding a game-high seven rebounds and two assists, and Fernald adding three rebounds. H-SC shot 50% (31-62) from the field, including 26% (5-19) on three-pointers, and 31% (4-13) at the free throw line. The Tigers enjoyed a 20-7 advantage in bench points, a 15-5 advantage in second chance points with 17 offensive rebounds, a 16-7 advantage in points from turnovers, forcing 13 miscues by VWU, and a 36-28 advantage in points scored in the paint.

Wilson led VWU with his 15 points, adding six rebounds, two assists and a game-high two blocks. Miles Wallace added 10 points for the Marlins. VWU shot 37% (17-46) from the field, including just 1-13 on three-pointers (8%), and 67% (12-18) at the line.
