Johns Hopkins Falls at Gettysburg, 68-60

GETTYSBURG, PA – Host Gettysburg used a 17-3 run over the final five minutes to beat 18th-ranked Johns Hopkins Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays see their 13-game win streak snapped as they fall to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the conference. The Bullets improve to 15-5 on the season and 11-2 in the conference.
 
Hopkins led 57-51 with 5:30 to play after a Brayden Fagbemi triple and a Sidney Thybulle layup. Ryan McKeon answered on the other end with a bucket in the paint to spark that 17-3 run. Four Bullets combined for the 17 points, fueled by Aiden Mess' eight points and McKeon's six. Mess gave Gettysburg up 59-57 at the 2:28-mark, it was the Bullets' first lead since midway through the first half. He then pushed the lead to four just 28 seconds later.
 
Fagbemi hit from downtown on the ensuing possession to pull the Blue Jays back within one, but the Bullets would close the game with seven unanswered to take the win.
 
This one was tightly contested from the jump as neither team led by more than five points over the opening 16 minutes. Leading by just three with 3:18 to play in the half, Hopkins got a jumper from Will Sykes and a three-pointer from Brian Johansson to push out to a37-29 lead just 77 seconds later. Gettysburg responded however with back-to-back buckets from Jordan Stafford to make it a 37-33 game at the half.
 
The opening seven minutes of the second half was just the same as the teams traded scores. The Blue Jays put together a 9-0 run to take the biggest lead of the game at the 12:02-mark. John Windley got things going with an old-fashioned three-point play, followed by a triple, and then Will Sykes hit a three of his own from the top of the key and just like that Hopkins led 52-41. Gettysburg came right back with nine unanswered points to pull within one with 8:00 on the clock. Fagbemi answered with a three-pointer, followed by a Thybulle layup to put JHU up 57-51 with 5:30 to play and setting the stage for the Bullets' comeback.
 
Windley led the Blue Jays with 19 points and had a pair of steals. Fagbemi also finished in double figures with 13 points, while grabbing six boards and handing out four assists. Johansson had a team-high nine rebounds while chipping in six points. Mess scored a game-high 22 points for the Bullets, to go with four blocks and seven rebounds. Akim Joseph finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nate Williams had a game-high 12 rebounds and added seven points.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 3 as the Blue Jays host the Dickinson Red Devils in the annual Wall-O'Mahony game. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 3:00 pm.
