Grinnell men erase late 17-point deficit to topple Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Down, but never out.

Trailing by 17 points with less than eight minutes to go, Grinnell College's men's basketball team never caved Wednesday night at Cornell College.

The Pioneers posted a fierce rally down the stretch, coming all the way back and going ahead with 2:14 remaining to secure an incredible 91-88 victory in Midwest Conference play.

The victory kept Grinnell tied for the MWC lead at 10-2 while improving to 16-4 overall. The Pioneers, who completed the regular-season sweep of the Rams, stretched their winning streak to four games and have won six of their last seven.

Grinnell's defense stepped up big, forcing seven turnovers during a six-minute span that saw the visitors go on a 25-4 run. Kai Te Huki '27 scored 15 of Grinnell's points to lead the spurt, while Ryan Tarighi '27 added five.

Cornell led 43-39 at halftime before pulling away in the second stanza, building an 83-66 lead with 7:51 left in the game. Grinnell then came to life, thanks in part to Tarighi, who sank three free throws and a jumper to make it 83-71 with 6:42 remaining.

Te Huki, who scored a game-high 43 points with the help of seven 3-pointers and an 8-of-8 performance from the free throw line, followed with a trey before Cornell got a basket. Te Huki kept it up,though, making another 3-pointer, two free throws and yet another trey to bring Grinnell within 85-82 at the 3:28 mark. Gabe Garcia '27 tied the game 26 seconds later when he converted a traditional three-point play, making it 85-all.

After two Cornell free throws, Tolu Johnson '25 tied the game again with a layup. Te Huki followed with two free throws at the 2:14 mark to give Grinnell the lead for good and added two more at the 1:51 mark to push the Pioneers ahead 91-87.

Cornell - 3-8 in the MWC and 6-14 overall - did get a free throw a short time later but was held scoreless down the stretch as Grinnell walked away with the victory.

Grinnell, which shot just 35.7 percent from the field in the first half, improved that mark to 44.7 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Joining Te Huki in double digits were Tarighi with 13 points and Garcia with 11. Garcia also had six rebounds and Jordan Lee '27 added five. Zach Rosen '26 dished out four assists and had four steals, while Tarighi contributed a career-high three steals.

Grinnell has another tough MWC road test Saturday, playing at Lake Forest College. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
