Fagbemi and Windley Lead Johns Hopkins to 83-70 Win at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Freshman Brayden Fagbemi and junior John Windley combined for 56 points to lead the 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to an 83-70 win at Ursinus Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 15-4 overall and 11-1 in the Centennial Conference with their 13th straight win. The Bears fall to 9-10 on the season, including 5-7 in the conference.

A quick five straight points for Ursinus pulled the home team to within six at 61-55 with 10:13 to play in the game. Graduate student Sidney Thybulle halted the spurt with a layup and sparked a 13-2 run. Fagbemi capped the run with back-to-back triples, sandwiched around a Trevor Wall jumper, and the Blue led 74-57 at the 5:42-mark. That would do it as Ursinus could get no closer than 11 points for the remainder of the game.

It was a close game early as the teams traded scores over the opening nine minutes and neither team led by more than four points. Marlin Wise tied the game at 17 with 10:42 to play in the half on a fast-break layup. Freshman Jeb Williams then drained a three on the other end that ignited a 12-1 run over a two and half minute span. Windley and Fagbemi combined for three straight threes to end the run and put the Blue Jays up 29-18.

Ursinus responded with a 7-1 spurt to trim the deficit to five but back-to-back buckets from Williams quickly pushed the lead to nine. The lead would see-saw up and down over the final three minutes and Hopkins took a 40-35 lead into the half. The teams traded scores early in the second and it was a six-point game at the 17:53-mark.

The Blue Jays rode a 10-2 run, fueled by a combined eight points from Windley and Fagbemi, to push out to a 54-40 lead with 15:01 on the clock. The Bears battled back, thanks to a 15-7 spurt to slice the deficit to six with 10:13 to play. Five Bears scored the run, capped by a pair of Matthew Field free throws that made it a 61-55 game.

Fagbemi led all scorers, and set a school record for points by a freshman, with 30 points. He made six three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Windley finished with 26 points, including 12 from downtown, to go with five boards and two steals. Thybulle grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and blocked four shots, while also scoring nine points. Four Bears finished in double figures, led by Trevor Wall's 15 points. Luke Neiman scored 14 points, while Wise and Nick Nocito added 10 points apiece.

Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, January 31 at Gettysburg. Tip-off at Bream Gym is slated for 8:00 pm.
