Adams Ignites WPI to Wire-to-Wire Victory to Complete NEWMAC Sweep of Babson

Babson Park, MA --- John Adams (Douglas, MA) totaled 23 points and hauled in 11 rebounds to propel WPI to a 61-55 road win at Babson on Wednesday, securing a regular season sweep for the Crimson and Gray over the Beavers and giving the Boynton Hillers four straight triumphs over the hosts in Staake Gymnasium.

The Engineers, who are receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com Top 25, improves to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in conference action, while Babson slips to 8-11 on the season and 4-6 in NEWMAC play.

WPI started the game on an 11-2 run, opening up 5-of-7 from the floor. John Adams (Douglas, MA) scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds in the first 10 minutes with the Engineers getting out to a 20-8 lead. The Crimson and Gray maintained their comfortable lead for the remainder of the half, leading by as many as 22, ending the half up 38-21. Adams led the Engineers in first half scoring with 15 points and six rebounds, as Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) added seven of his own.

WPI's shooting went cold in the second half. They started 1-of-6 from the floor, and a Sevilla layup with 14 minutes left would be the last Engineers basket for the next eight minutes, as the Crimson and Gray went 0-7 and Babson used a 14-5 run to pull within six points. Sevilla ended the drought for the Engineers, but Babson continued to stifle WPI's offense and trimmed the lead to just three before Adams added his 22nd and 23rd points on a pair of free throws to give the Engineers a five-point cushion with 2:51 to go.  A baseline jumper by Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) with 1:08 remaining proved to be the dagger as it pushed WPI across the finish line to a 61-55 victory.

Adams had a big night for the Crimson and Gray, finishing with 23 points and 11 rebounds for another double-double, three shy of his career best in scoring. The double-double was the senior's fourth in five outings, the ninth of the season and 32nd of his career. Callahan amassed 13 points, including an impressive 9-of-10 from the free throw line and Sevilla added 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals.   J.R. Newman (Havertown, MA) amassed six rebounds and Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, NH) totaled six points in 15 minutes of action.

Steph Baxter (Worcester, MA) had 14 points for Babson and Aidan Horan (Orchard Park, NY) chipped in with 10 as they were the only Beavers in double-digits for the game.  Timmy O'Toole (Milton, MA) gobbled up 11 rebounds for the hosts before fouling out.

The Beavers parlayed 23 offensive rebounds into 18 second chance points but were limited to 27.7% shooting from the floor and just 3-of-23 (13%) from 3-point land by a WPI defense that entered the game ranked fifth in Division III in scoring and is now seventh among over 1,000 NCAA basketball programs over all three divisions.

WPI is back at home on Saturday, welcoming Coast Guard to Harrington Auditorium for a 2pm tilt.   Babson is also in Worcester on Saturday, venturing to the city to face Clark in a 4pm affair.
