Captains Set New Shooting Mark in 111-48 Home Victory over Warren Wilson

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University made 47 of 74 shots Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center, as the 25th-ranked Captains dismantled Warren Wilson College, 111-48. The 63.5 percent shooting mark set a new single game record for CNU, as the Captains improved to 16-4 on the season with their fourth consecutive victory.

Six Captains reached double figures in scoring, and all 13 who suited up for the game got into the scoring column. Freshman Toa Hollenbeck led the way with 18 points, followed by senior Jahn Hines (17), senior Trey Barber (15), freshman Isaiah Dozier (12), freshman Tyson Henderson (10), and freshman Ryan Derderian (10).

Christopher Newport never trailed in the lop-sided victory, jumping to an early 6-0 lead, and pulling away to a 61-17 halftime advantage. The 63-point final verdict matched the biggest lead of the game for the Captains, who are now 9-1 at home this season. The game was the first-ever between the schools.

The Captains out-rebounded the Owls, 55-23, and all 13 CNU players pulled down at least one board. Freshman Ethan Ward topped the rebounding column with seven. The Captains also dished out 30 assists on their 47 made buckets, led by Tyson Henderson's six assists.

"I really liked the way we stayed focused today, especially with a a lot of young players in the game," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the victory. "I thought we showed a lot of maturity, and our guys worked hard to do what we were asking of them. We did a good job at both ends of the floor, and this was a great chance for our younger guys to learn and grow."

Warren Wilson, located near Asheville, N.C., fell to 3-12 on the season. The Owls were led in scoring by senior Antonio Banuelos, who scored 14 points.

No CNU player saw more than 23 minutes of playing time in the dominant triumph. The 111-point CNU performance was the highest point total of John Krikorian's 13-year coaching tenure. It's the most since C.J. Woollum's squad scored 115 in January of 2006 in a 115-57 victory over Maine-Presque Isle in the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center.

The 63.5 percent shooting mark broke the prior record of 62.5 percent, set by the Captains in 2012 against Greensboro College.

CNU's 61-point first half surpassed the Captains' entire game total from Wednesday, when Christopher Newport won at Mary Washington, 59-57.

"More than anything, a win like this builds a tremendous amount of confidence," Krikorian continued. "It's been a grind of a year with close game after close game, and we've played in some tough venues on the road. In some ways, we've thrown our younger guys to the wolves, and for them to be able to spread their wings a little bit in a game like this will be a big help."

Saturday's victory came in the first of five straight home games for CNU. Christopher Newport will next host the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz Thursday afternoon at the Freeman Center. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
