GC Overcomes Shooting Struggles for Crucial Road Win

#8 Guilford made the trip up to Virginia for a road conference battle against Washington and Lee. In a tightly contested battle, the Quakers utilized a late-game offensive push to best the Generals, 65-54.

In the first period, both teams traded buckets, an evenly contested few minutes to start. Like in many previous games this season, Guilford used momentum for a large run (12-2) over a four and a half-minute span to lead by 13, at the 13:38 mark in the first period (18-5). W&L settled back into the contest, and found their way to score baskets, while stonewalling Guilford simultaneously. GC's lead was just two at the 3:22 mark (25-23).

The Quakers eventually found their way to a six-point lead at the halfway point (31-25), but the Generals were right on their heels as the second half went underway.

The home side tied the game at 37 with just over 15 minutes to go, riding a 12-6 run, along with a pair of makes from beyond the arc. W&L took its first lead of the game (39-37) with 14:22 left, and the game would remain hotly contested from this point.

Both teams went scoreless for the next minute of play, until a pair of free throw makes from Tyler Dearman and Julius Burch gave the Quakers a four-point lead with 9:26 left in the contest. Foul shots were crucial for Guilford, making all six up to this point.

GC remained hot; an alley-oop finish from Caleb Farrish and driving layup from Luke Proctor gave the visitors their largest lead since early in the first period, eight (50-42). Both teams' offenses went cold at this point, going 5-15 over the ensuing 4:42 of play. The Generals slightly bested the Quakers, and shortened their deficit to just three with 3:48 left (53-50).

GC caught a late-game spark; three-pointers from Rob Littlejohn and Caleb Farrish and a pair of free-throw makes from Dearman helped put the Generals away, en route to a crucial away conference win, 65-54.

Dearman led the way for the visitors with 17 points and four rebounds. Farrish had one of his best performances of the season, with 16 points and a season-high five steals. Burch controlled the paint effectively with 12 rebounds, to go along with nine points.

The Quakers return to Ragan-Brown for another ODAC matchup versus the Panthers of Ferrum College. Tip-off on Wednesday, January 24 is set for 7 p.m.
