Christopher Newport Uses Big Second Half for Second Straight Game to Beat Rosemont, 84-64

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second straight game, Christopher Newport University used a second half surge Saturday to break open a close game and coast to victory. The Captains, now 14-4, out-scored Rosemont College (Pa.) after halftime, 54-33, to defeat the Ravens, 84-64.

Senior All-American Jahn Hines led the CNU attack with 20 points, and freshmen Tyson Henderson (16) and Toa Hollenbeck (12) also reached double figures in scoring. The Captains improved to 8-1 at home this season with the win in front of 703 fans at the Freeman Center.

"We've come to expect that teams are going to play at a really high level against us, and I think Rosemont did that for the majority of the game," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the triumph. "They made it difficult for us, and we had to battle, which will make us better. I think the area where we really struggled most was making layups, and had we done that it probably would have been a much different game."

The effort by the Captains came just three days after Christopher Newport led by four at halftime at Marymount University, and used a 15-2 run to start the second half to pull away from the Saints. The Captains ended up out-scoring Marymount in the second half Wednesday night, 48-36, en route to the 16-point victory.

Rosemont, now 2-12, held a 31-30 advantage at the half after a first half that featured seven lead changes and five ties. CNU took a 36-34 lead on a Jahn Hines laup with 17:10 to play in the second half, and the Captains never trailed again. The final verdict of 20 points marked CNU's largest lead of the game.

The Captains missed on all seven three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes, but recovered to make six of ten shots from long range after the break, and all from Henderson and Hollenbeck. Henderson knocked down four-of-five three-pointers in the second half and ended up with a career-high 16 points. Henderson also posted eight assists, four steals, two blocked shots, and two rebounds while committing no turnovers in his 28 minutes of playing time. Hollenbeck, who didn't score in the opening half, tallied all 12 of his points in the second stanza, with six coming on two long balls.

"The three-point shots in the second half were just better shots than we took in the first half," Krikorian continued. "The first half we really didn't take those shots in the flow of our offense. In the second half, we got some offensive rebounds and kick-outs that led to those going down."

CNU matched a school record in the victory by blocking 17 shots, led by four rejections from freshman Isaiah Dozier. Seven different Captains blocked shots, with senior All-American Trey Barber and fifth-year senor Ian Anderson swatting three each. CNU set the mark of 17 blocks vs. Ferrum College in January of 1991.

The Captains out-rebounded the Ravens, 45-34, with Barber leading the way with nine boards to go with his nine points. Jahn Hines filled his stat line with six assists and five rebounds in addition to his 20 points, which moved him into 16th place on CNU's all-time scoring list. Hines now has scored 1,317 career points in 81 games, and is ten points behind Jermaine Woods for 15th on the list.

Rosemont was led by a trio of double figure scorers. Sophomore Denelle Holly led the way with 21 points, while freshman Dejuan Taylor (12) and senior Fatayn Wesley (11) also reached double digits. The game was the first meeting ever of the two programs.

Christopher Newport will travel to Fredericksburg, Va., on Wednesday to take on the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington (9-5). Tip off time is set for 7:00 p.m.

"Mary Washington is the number one defense in the country, so we're going to have to execute at a very high level," Krikorian concluded. "They've also got one of the top strength of schedules in the nation, so we're going to have our hands full."
