Christopher Newport Sails Past Marymount, 87-71, Thanks to Big Second Half Effort

ARLINGTON, Va. - Christopher Newport University used a 15-2 run to start the second half Wednesday night to pull away from the Saints of Marymount University. The Captains, now 13-4 on the season, recorded an 87-71 victory at Converse Family Fieldhouse.

Freshman Toa Hollenbeck recorded a career-high 22 points to lead the CNU attack, and made eight-of-14 shots, including three-of-seven from long range.

"Credit to Marymount, they were tough and made some big shots in the first half," Head Coach John Krikorian said following the victory. "I thought we got good looks in the first half, but we just didn't knock them down. We felt if we kept at it and tightened up our defensive effort we'd be OK in the second half. We really made some stops and went on the big run and that was a big difference in the game."

CNU held a 39-35 advantage at the intermission following a back-and-forth first half that saw nine lead changes and seven ties. The Captains pushed their lead to as many 23 in the second half en route to the 16-point final verdict.

Senior All-American Jahn Hines posted 16 points and nine rebounds, and his defensive effort helped the Captains surge to the big second half lead. At halftime, Hines switched to defend Marymount's Wyatt Hockenberry, who had scored 11 points in the opening half, and held him to just one field goal in the second stanza. Hines also posted three assists and two steals, and moved into 17th place on CNU's all-time scoring list with his 16-point performance. Hines is now seven points behind Mike Green for 16th place on the list.

Senior All-American Trey Barber returned to the Captains, and recorded his third double-double of the season. Barber scored 14 points and pulled down ten rebounds in his first action since December 14th. He also added five blocked shots, four assists, and a steal.

Christopher Newport tallied 21 assists on 34 made buckets, and the Captains scored 30 points in the paint in the second half. CNU's depth was evident, as the Captains bench outscored the Saints bench, 56-18, for the night.

The Captains return to action this Saturday at the Freeman Center. CNU hosts the Ravens of Rosemont College with tip off scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
