Men's Basketball Completes Double Digit Comeback Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After trailing by as many as 17 points, the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team completes the comeback and beats Potsdam 100-90 for their third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win. The Cardinals were led by Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) who led all scorers with 27 points, six rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Including Tabb, the Cardinals had four players score double figures. 
 
Ikechukwu Ezike (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Paul Robeson) was the next top scorer for the Cardinals as he had 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Right behind him was Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) who had 14 points and four rebounds. Other contributions came from Dylan Trombley (Moriah, N.Y. / Moriah) and Willard Anderson Jr. (Buffalo, N.Y. / East). Trombley scored 10 points and collected 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Anderson Jr. had a balanced game with nine points, five assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Tim Thomas (Manhattan, N.Y. / Commonwealth Academy (Mass.)) and Franklin Infante (East Rockaway, N.Y. / East Rockaway) added eight and six points to the offensive showing. 
 
For the Bears, Colton Huesti led his team in points with 21 and five rebounds. The Bears also got contributions from Parker Kelly and Jeff Williamson who had 16 and 15 respectively with Kelly adding three rebounds and Williamson six. 
 
Overall, both teams shot the ball well, as Plattsburgh shot 45.9% and Potsdam 45.1%. The Cardinals outrebounded the Bears 51-38 with 17 of them being offensive and leading to 23 second chance points to help earn the win over Potsdam. The Cardinals also won the turnover battle 14-18 which they got 26 points from and the Bears 19. Both teams got production from their benches as the Cardinals bench scored 31 and the Bears 29. 
 
Plattsburgh rises to 6-6 overall (3-2 SUNYAC) and will be back in action this Friday, Jan. 12 as they host Brockport for a 7:30 pm tip-off. Potsdam falls to 2-10 overall (1-4 SUNYAC) and will be back in action as they host Geneseo for a 7:30 pm tip-off. 
 
After trailing by double digits throughout the first half the Cardinals cut the Bears lead to four. Ezike started the first half off with a dunk followed by a Trombley layup. Williamson responded with a three that made the score 4-3 Cardinals. With over 15 minutes to play, the Bears took their first lead of the half on made free throws from Kelly that made the score 8-6. From the 14:31 mark until the 12:16 mark the Bears went on a 10-0 run. Ezike ended the run with a layup that made the score 20-12 Bears. The Bears got the largest lead off the half (17) on a Kelly jumper that made the score 31-14 with less than 10 minutes to play. From the 5:53 mark until the 4:04 mark the Cardinals went on an 8-0 run that cut the Bears lead to eight. The Cardinals ended the half on a 9-1 run that started at the 1:16 mark and made the score 46-42 at halftime.  
 
Kawar Singh opened the second half with a made free throw followed by a Tabb layup that made the score 47-44 Bears. With less than 17 minutes to play, the Cardinals took the lead 54-53 on an Anderson Jr. layup. Shortly after Issac Oduro Jr. tied the game at 57. With less than 13 minutes to play both teams exchanged buckets as Kaleb Lewis, Smith, and Kelly made layups that gave the Bears the lead 66-65. At the 5:46 mark, the Cardinals regained the lead 81-80 on a Smith layup but the Bears got the lead back on Lewis three that made the score 86-83 with a little over four minutes to play. The Cardinals took the lead 89-87 on a Trombley layup at the 2:13 mark and held the lead for the rest of the game as they went on a 15-3 run that closed the game as they won 100-90.
