Fitzgerald's Career High Carries Men's Basketball to Big Conference Victory Over St. Lawrence

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - First year Shea Fitzgerald dropped a career-high 34 points to carry the Vassar College Men's Basketball team to its second conference victory of the season in a 66-51 win over Liberty League preseason favorite St. Lawrence on Friday night at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The victory pushes the Brewers to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in conference action while the Saints fall to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in Liberty League play.

FIRST HALF

  • Vassar opened the first half with a 9-5 lead on five points from Fitzgerald along with buckets from junior Luke Adams and sophomore Sacha Greenberg.
  • Adams' three pointer extended the Vassar lead to seven points with 10:37 remaining before the Saints cut the advantage to three following made jumpers from Aidan Macaulay and Andrew Cowan.
  • The Vassar lead grew back to six on a Fitzgerald jumper with 5:44 left in the half until St. Lawrence went on an 11-3 run to close the half with a 26-24 advantage.
  • The Brewers closed the first half shooting 32.1-percent from the field and knocked down three triples while St. Lawrence finished the half shooting 44-percent from the field and canned two three-pointers.

SECOND HALF

  • Vassar regained the lead at the 16:48 mark on a three-pointer from Fitzgerald before two free throws from Cowan gave the Saints a 32-30 advantage.
  • Following a three-point play from senior Logan Scott to regain a one-point lead, the Brewers put together a 10-3 run, capped by a triple from Adams, to push ahead 43-35 with 9:07 remaining.
  • The Brewers lead grew to double digits for the first time with 6:07 left in the game on two free throws from Scott and Vassar went ahead by 10 on two more free throws from sophomore JP Miranda with 2:44 to go.
  • Vassar's lead extended to a game-high 15 points on two made free throws from first year Avery Lee with 40 seconds left to clinch the conference victory.
  • VC improved its shooting to 41.3-percent in the second half, while making four threes and were 14-16 from the free throw line. 
  • St. Lawrence was held to 20.8-percent shooting overall and was just 1-for-8 from distance while shooting 14-for-16 from the free throw stripe.

FOR THE BREWERS

  • Fitzgerald's career-high 34 points, which is tied for the second-most points scored in a single game in Vassar history, was converted on 12-for-22 from the field and also chipped in three rebounds, three steals and three rebounds.
  • Adams finished with 12 points, seven boards and a team-high five assists along with Scott tallying seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
  • First year Sebastian Medina pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added two blocks while Miranda added four points and six rebounds off the bench.

FOR THE SAINTS

  • Adam Dudzinski led the Saints with 15 points and nine rebounds while A. Macaulay tallied 11 points, six boards and two blocks.
  • Cowan finished the night with 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists along with Trey Syroka recorded four points, two steals, two boards and a team-best three assists.

GAME STATS

  • Vassar shot 36.8-percent overall while making seven three-pointers and shooting 17-for-20 from the free throw line.
  • St. Lawrence was held to 32.7-percent from the field and was just 3-for-16 from three-point range while going 16-for-18 from the free throw line.
  • The Brewers converted 15 St. Lawrence turnovers into 22 points and held a 22-7 edge.
  • The Saints held a slim 10-8 advantage in second chance points and 26-22 edge in points in the paint.
