BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team returned to Centennial Conference action with a 33-point win on Saturday afternoon. JHU led wire to wire to beat visiting Ursinus, 91-58. The Blue Jays ran their to five and improve to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Hopkins broke open a close game midway through the first half. Juniors John Windley and Brian Johansson drained back-to-back triples, followed by a Johansson fast-break layup and the Blue Jays led 26-13 at the 8:09-mark. The teams traded scores over a four-minute span and the lead was 12 after a Nick Nocito three-pointer.
Graduate student Carson James made a driving layup with 3:18 on the clock to spark a 9-3 spurt to end the half and send Hopkins into the break with a 43-25 lead. The teams went back-and-forth over the first 13 minutes of the second half as the lead see-sawed between 15 and 24 points.
Leading 71-51 with 6:34 to play, freshman Will Stevenson scored a bucket in the paint to spark a 20-7 run to end the game. Eight different players scored during the run as the Blue Jays grabbed the 33-point win.
Five players scored in double figures for Hopkins, led by Johansson's season-high 19 points. Windley and freshman Jeb Williams scored 13 points each, while Windley had a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Charlie Jackson added 11 points to go with six boards. Freshman Brayden Fagbemi chipped in 10 points and a game-high six assists and three steals. Nocito led the Bears with 11 points while Marlin Wise added 10 points.
Hopkins held the conference's best offense to more than 17 points below its scoring average. Ursinus entered the game averaging 75.6 points per game on 46.5 percent shooting. The Blue Jays held the Bears to just 29.3 percent from the field. It is the Bears' lost field goal percentage since February 7, 2018. It is also the second time this season that the Blue Jays have held their opponent to under 30 percent shooting.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, January 9 as the Blue Jays visit the Dickinson Red Devils. The Centennial Conference contest is set for an 8:00 pm start at the Kline Center.
