RIPON, Wis. - While any victory on the road is appreciated, Grinnell College's men's basketball win at Ripon College Thursday night was particularly special.
Grinnell not only remained unbeaten on the road this season, but the Pioneers snapped a seven-game losing streak on the Red Hawks' court with a 98-91 decision.
At 10-2 overall, Grinnell is off to its best start in a decade and its 5-0 mark in Midwest Conference play is the best for the program since 2018-19.
Just how rare have victories at Ripon been for Grinnell? In 56 contests played on the Red Hawks' court, the Pioneers have been victorious just eight times dating back to 1941.
The Pioneers, who moved to 5-0 in away games this season, rallied after trailing by a point at halftime.
Jordan Lee '27 tied a school record for 3-point accuracy, hitting 6-of-7 shots from beyond the arc for an 85.7 percent success rate. That is the seventh time a Pioneer has shot that well, and the first time since Zack Stice did so in 2018.
Lee, who scored a career-high 31 points, was 10-of-12 overall from the field for an 83.3 percent success rate. That ranks ninth in program history.
As a team, Grinnell amassed a season-high 24 steals. Zach Rosen '26 had five steals, Nick Courtney '26 added four and Lee had three. All of those are career-highs.
Gabe Garcia '27 and Kai Te Huki '27 each scored 17 points, Tolu Johnson '25 grabbed eight rebounds and had two blocks, while Te Huki led the way in assists with three.
Ripon, 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the MWC, led 46-45 at halftime. It was still a tight game when Grinnell opened things up with a nine-point run. Leading by three at 76-73 with 7:50 left, Lee converted a layup, Te Huki made two free throws, Rosen drained a 3-pointer and Te Huki scored inside to make it 85-73 at the 5:43 mark.
Ripon crept within four points with just under a minute remaining before Lee made two free throws with 8 seconds left and Rosen added another with one tick left on the clock to secure the victory.
The Pioneers remain in Wisconsin Saturday, playing Lawrence University in another MWC test at Appleton. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
