Brandeis men close non-conference slate at 9-2 after 76-59 win at Regis

WESTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team picked up its fourth wire-to-wire win of the season this afternoon, dispatching host Regis College, 76-59, in the final non-conference game of the Judges' season.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 9-2.
  • Regis: 4-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Brandeis scored the first five points of the game and opened on a 12-2 run over the first 4:45 and they never looked back.
  • Junior Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) scored six of his 12 first-half points during the opening salvo.
  • Regis got within four points just over seven minutes into the game when Joshua Perez hit a lay-up, but back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore Jake Bender (Hope, R.I./St. George's School) and senior David Perez-MIralles (Miami, Fla./Riviera Prep) quickly reestablished Brandeis's double-digit lead.
  • The Judges kept it a two-possession game for the rest of the first half, with Regis getting within five points before an Otoo fast-break bucket gave Brandeis a 35-28 lead at halftime.
  • Brandeis looked to put things away early in the second half, opening on a 7-2 run to take a 42-30 lead on a bucket by senior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham).
  • The Pride rallied with a 13-5 run of their own, getting to within 48-43 after Justin Evelyn hit a 3-pointer with 10:33 left in the game, while a three-point play by Jamir Harvey 50 seconds later got Regis within four at 50-46 with 9:43 to go.
  • Brandeis responded with efficiency from beyond the arc, as the Judges' next six field goals were all 3-pointers, from four different players. Perez-Miralles and senior Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) each had two trifectas, with Adusei capping the run at the 3:59 mark that made it 70-53.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brandeis put four players in double figures in scoring. Adusei led the squad with 16 points, eight coming in each half. He hit 6-of-9 overall, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and had three assists and three rebounds.
  • Perez-Miralles had 13 points off the bench, one shy of his career-best. He also matched his career-high with four assists and had a game-high four steals.
  • Otoo added 12 points, all coming in the first half, while Bender finished with 11 points.
  • Senior Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) had just three points, but stuffed the stat sheet with 12 rebounds and five assists, both game-highs that tied his previous career-bests.
  • Using helped the Judges win the rebounding battle, 39-27, including 13-4 on the offensive glass. The Judges had a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points.  Although turnovers were close, 14-15 in favor of Brandeis, the visitors converted their opportunities into 23 points compared to eight for Regis.
  • Russell Rau led the Pride with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jamir Harvey added 11 points and four assists, while Zakaria Latifi also had 11 points.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • In finishing 9-2 in the non-conference schedule, Brandeis matched the 2021-22 squad for best record under coach Jean Bain in non-league games.
  • The Judges' current eight-game winning streak is the longest in a single season since 2010-11. The Judges did win 10 in a row at the end of '21-22 (four straight) and the start of '22-23 (six straight).
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Brandeis and Regis in men's basketball.
