NJCU Bounces Back with 19-Point Win over Old Westbury at Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The New Jersey City University men's basketball team picked up a convincing victory in the consolation round of the Captains Classic, hosted by #12 Christopher Newport University, on Friday afternoon, Dec. 29. NJCU saw five players finish in double figures, including a standout second-straight double-double from All-Tournament selection junior forward Ryan Savoy (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood), who stuffed the stat sheet across the board. He helped the Gothic Knights best The College at Old Westbury, 89-70.

The Green and Gold (4-9) went back and forth with the Panthers (0-11) in the early portion of the first half before blowing it open, going up by 18 at 42-24 with 2:56 left until the break. They headed into the locker room leading by 15 at 44-29. Old Westbury managed to cut the deficit back down to single digits with a three-pointer to make it 69-60 with 6:40 remaining. Fortunately, the Gothic Knights stayed efficient throughout the remainder of the game to take home the 19-point victory.

Highlights:
- Savoy nearly finished with a triple-double, chipping in 13 points and a game-best 11 rebounds to go with a career-high eight assists, a game-high-tying and season-best five blocks and a career-best five steals. He is the lone representative for NJCU on the Captains Classic All-Tournament Team.
- Junior guard Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) led the Gothic Knights with 16 points to go with career- and game-highs in assists (9) and steals (6) and added five boards in a team-high 35 minutes.
- In his second game with the program, junior guard Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
- Senior guard Will Brown III (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) notched 12 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line.
- Senior forward Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) notched 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist.
