SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Rasheed Cooley netted 27 points for Stevenson on Wednesday night, but the Mustangs (5-4) came up on the wrong end of a 79-68 decision to host Wittenberg (9-4) in men's basketball play.
The two schools were meeting in the championship game of the Wittenberg Holiday Classic.
Nate Arrington had another double-double, as he scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Stevenson, with Cameron Smith netting eight points.
Host Wittenberg – the all-time leader in wins in men's basketball in Division III – put five players in double figures with Tyler Galluch getting 20 and Trey Killens getting 14.
Stevenson took the lead at 6-5 at the 17:54 mark of the first half as Smith made a three-pointer, followed by a jumper by Ronald Ayers with 17:14 left in the first to give the Mustangs an 8-5 lead.
Scott Dawson's jumper with 14:13 left in the first gave Wittenberg the lead for good at 12-10, part of a 9-1 run that would apex with Wittenberg a 21-11 lead. The Mustangs would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
