The third-ranked Guilford College men's basketball team hit the road to face undefeated Shenandoah University. A run midway through the first by the Hornets led to a 65-58 defeat for the Quakers.
Guilford, now 9-1, had its best start to the season since the 2013-14 season when the team also started the year 9-1 through the first 10 games. Tyler Dearman led the way for the Quakers with 24 points on the afternoon.
Opening the first period, the two squads went back-and-forth until Shenandoah (11-0, 3-0) hit a three with 13:12 on the clock for a 7-4 lead. Guilford (9-1, 2-1) scored seven-straight with five points from Dearman.
The Hornets responded with a run of their own, 10-0, and went ahead by six (17-11) with 7:18 remaining in the first. The Quakers were able to narrow the difference to two (20-18) before the home side extended it back to seven.
Late in the first, Gabe Proctor hit a jump shot before Rob Littlejohn made a three-point shot for the final points of the half. Going to the locker room, Guilford trailed Shenandoah, 27-24.
In the second half, Guilford was able to cut the margin to a single possession on multiple occasions but the home squad never gave up the lead and even extended it to 11 (58-47) with 5:02 left in regulation.
The Quakers tried put together a late push but the Hornets had an answer each time to go on for the seven-point victory.
Julius Burch was the other Quaker to finish with double-digit points as he scored 17 while grabbing 14 rebounds. Bench points were the difference as the home side had 21 compared to only four for GC.
Guilford will have a 10-day break until its own Holiday Classic starting on Friday, December 29. The Quakers will face Southern Virginia in game two of the first doubleheader with start time slated for 7:00 p.m.
