#8 Spartans Improve to 9-0 with an 82-70 Win at Earlham

The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team kept its unblemished record intact with an 82-70 win at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana on Sunday afternoon.

It marked the 29th consecutive regular-season non-conference win for the Spartans, who will head into the holiday season with a 9-0 record. Earlham fell to 0-9 with the loss.

Graduate student forward Colin Kahl led a group of four Spartans who scored in double figures, finishing the game with 19 points, six rebounds, and a pair of assists. Junior forward Umar Rashid notched his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds while adding four blocks and four assists. Graduate student guard Richie Manigault contributed 17 points, and graduate student guard Preston Maccoux came off the bench to score 16 points.

CWRU did not take its first lead in the game until the 10:31 mark of the first half and trailed by as many as six during the opening minutes of the game. However, the Spartans were able to even the score at 15-15 with 11:25 left in the frame on back-to-back threes by junior guard Sam Trunley and Manigault and took the lead on a two by Maccoux. With the score later tied at 17-17, a 13-4 run by CWRU, capped off by a Kahl long-range shot, put the Spartans ahead by nine, 30-21. CWRU went on to lead by as many as 12 points in the first half, taking a 41-29 lead with 3:37 left in the period and took a 43-35 lead into the second half.

The Spartans led through the entirety of the second half, but the Quakers remained close for much of the frame, cutting the CWRU lead to as few as four points in the opening five minutes of the half. CWRU led by five, 54-49, with 12:53 to play, but a quick 8-0 run featuring a pair of threes by Maccoux helped the Spartans expand their advantage to 13 points, 62-49, with 10:44 to go. A three-pointer by Rashid with 7:35 left in the game gave CWRU a 15-point lead at 70-55, its largest of the game. Earlham would trim the lead to six points with 1:32 left in the game, but free throws down the stretch by Rashid and Trunley helped CWRU lock down the 12-point win.

CWRU finished the game shooting 45.0% overall (27-60) and 41.4% (12-29) from three-point range. The Spartans outrebounded the Quakers 38-26 on Sunday.

The Spartans will now be on an 11-day hiatus for the holidays before returning to play at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
