#22 Washington University Tops Johns Hopkins, 67-61

NEW YORK, NY – Washington University used a big second half to defeat the Johns Hopkins men's basketball at the Scholars Classic Sunday at NYU. The 12th-ranked Blue Jays slip to 1-2 on the season while the 22nd-ranked Bears improve to 2-0.
 
Trailing by 14 early in the second half, Will Grudzinski drained a fast-break three-pointer to ignite a 14-4 run as the Bears pulled within four. Kyle Beedon put the punctuation on the run with a triple at the 13:45-mark that made it a 45-41 game. The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back buckets from graduate student Carson James and freshman Jeb Williams to push the lead back to eight.
 
Yogi Oliff then hit a three, followed by a Calvin Kapral hook shot to spark a 15-7 spurt by WashU. Six different players scored for the Bears in the seven-minute stretch as the took a 64-56 lead with 4:01 to play. Junior John Windley hit from downtown to pull the Blue Jays back within five before a two-minute scoring drought for both teams. Sophomore Charlie Jackson ended the drought with a putback in the paint to make it a 64-61 game with exactly one minute on the clock. That's as close as JHU could get however as WashU went three-of-six from the line to hold on for the win.
 
The first eight minutes were tightly contested as neither team could take more than a four-point lead. Following a Drake Kindsvater layup, Hopkins got six unanswered from Windley and graduate student Sidney Thybulle to push out to a 15-10 lead. The lead seesawed up and down over the ensuing five minutes as the teams swapped scores.  
 
Leading by two, junior Brian Johansson drained a three-pointer to kick-start an 11-2 run that saw Hopkins take a 36-25 lead into the half. Five Blue Jays scored during the run, which was capped by a Windley layup with 1:04 to play.
 
Thybulle led the Blue Jays with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards. He also blocked three shots and had a steal. Windley also finished in double figures (10 points), while Jackson had a career and game-high 12 rebounds. He added eight points to just miss his first career double-double. Freshman Brayden Fagbemi handed out four assists and chipped in seven points.
 
Kindsvater led four Bears in double figures with 14 points and pulled nine rebounds. Hayden Doyle scored 12 points a, to go with seven boards and four assists. Oliff and Beedon added 10 points apiece.
 
Hopkins returns to the court on Wednesday, November 15 at York. Tip-off at Wolf Gymnasium is slated for 7:00 pm.
