Johns Hopkins Runs Past Muhlenberg, 66-44

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team broke out early and didn't look back in a 66-44 win over Muhlenberg Saturday in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays win back-to-back games to improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Mules fall to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 in the CC.

Leading 6-4 early, junior John Windley sparked a 16-4 Blue Jay run with a fast-break layup at the 14:32-mark. Freshman Jeb Williams followed with a bucket in the paint and then Windley drained a three just 31 seconds later put JHU up 13-6. Following a pair of Mule baskets, the Blue Jays rattled off nine straight, capped by back-to-back Windley buckets and Hopkins led 22-8 with 7:44 on the clock.

Luke Gordos and Peter Stanton-Shephard halted the run with five unanswered to pull Muhlenberg back within nine. Williams came right back with a bucket from downtown, followed by a Charlie Jackson driving layup and a Sidney Thybulle dunk and just like that the lead was 16. The teams traded scores over the final four and a half minutes and Hopkins took a 36-21 lead into the half.

The teams came out of the lockerroom slow and the Blue Jays were up 41-29 at the 15:10-mark. Senior Will Sykes scored on a put-back to ignite a 12-0 Hopkins run as the Jays pushed out to a 52-29 lead with 11:16 to play. The Mules answered with a 12-2 run of their own to pull back within 13 at the 5:42-mark. Six different players scored during the run, capped by a Stanton-Shepherd pull-up jumper.

That's as close as the visitors would get, however. Jackson swished a triple to spark a quick 11-point run as Hopkins pushed out to a 65-41 lead with 2:17 on the clock. That would do it as the Blue Jays went on to win 66-44.

James led Hopkins with 13 points to go with five assists and three steals. Jackson added 11 points, going 4-of-6 from the field. Thybulle had a game-high 12 rebounds and four blocks, while also scoring six points and grabbing three steals. Jayson Williams-Johnson led the Mules with 13 points while Stanton-Shephard added 12 points. Hopkins held Muhlenberg to just 26.4 percent from the field and nearly 30 points below their season average (72.4).

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on Franklin & Marshall. Tip-off at the Mayser Center is slated for 8:00 pm.

Notes: Thybulle became just the 13th player in program history with 500 rebound and now has 505 for his career • He also moved into seventh place in JHU history with 203 career offensive rebounds and 16th with 302 defensive rebounds • James eclipsed 900 points for his career and needs 95 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
