BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Gettysburg beat host Johns Hopkins, 70-56, in both teams' Centennial Conference opener Tuesday night. The Blue Jays wrap up a tough stretch of six days in 13 days as they head into the Thanksgiving break with a 2-4 record. The Bullets win their fourth straight as they improve to 4-1 on the season.
Gettysburg used a 9-1 run that bridged halftime to take the lead for good. Trailing 29-26 after a Charlie Jackson driving layup, Ryan McKeon made a hook shot, followed by a Carl Schaller three-point and the Bullets led 31-29 with 2:21 to play in the first. Jackson and Akim Joseph each made one of two shots from the line in the final two minutes and Gettysburg took a 32-30 lead into the half.
Nate Williams opened the second half with a bucket from downtown to push Gettysburg's lead to five. Carson James and Brayden Fagbemi sandwiched layups around a Williams jumper and it was 37-34 Bullets at 16:18. Joseph doubled the lead with a three-pointer from the top of the key, but four unanswered points for the Blue Jays sliced the deficit to two just two minutes later.
The lead seesawed up and down over the ensuing six minutes as Gettysburg led 47-46 with 8:11 on the clock. Coming out of a Bullets' timeout, Max Pernetti made a layup that sparked a 14-1 run that saw the Bullets push out to a 61-47 lead. Williams capped the run with a bucket from downtown with 4:16 to play. A Sidney Thybulle dunk, followed by a John Windley three trimmed the deficit back to nine just 90 seconds later. But that's as close as Hopkins could get in the final minutes as Gettysburg took the 70-56 win.
Hopkins grabbed an early 8-4 lead, thanks in part to threes from Brian Johansson and James. Jordan Stafford then made a driving layup to ignite a quick 12-4 run that saw the Bullets go up 16-12 with 13:02 to play in the opening half. Hopkins answered with a Jackson layup and a James three-point play, sandwiched around a Joseph free throw and it was 17-all. Johansson then drained a triple to put Hopkins up 20-17 at the 9:06-mark. Pernetti answered on the other end with a turnaround jumper to grab the lead back for Gettysburg. The teams traded scores over the next five minutes and the Blue Jays led 29-26 with 3:24 on the clock.
James was the only Blue Jay in double figures as he finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Windley added nine points and five boards, while Johansson had eight points and seven rebounds.
