Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Preston Maccoux scored a season-high 22 points to lead a group of five Spartans in double-figures, as eighth-ranked CWRU turned away an upset-minded Hiram College squad with a 104-95 win over the Terriers on Monday night in Hiram, Ohio.
The Spartans, who have now won 28-straight regular season non-conference games dating back to the 2021-22 campaign, improved to 8-0 overall, while Hiram fell to 1-9 for the campaign.
It was the second-straight double-digit scoring effort for Maccoux, who came off the bench to break the 20-point mark for the first time as a Spartan. He shot seven-of-12 overall and three-of-seven from three-point range while dishing out a season-high four assists and collecting three rebounds.
Graduate student forward Colin Kahl finished the game with 21 points and collected eight rebounds with a pair of assists. Graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo scored 19 points, making four-of-six three-point attempts, and matched his career high with six assists. Graduate student guard Richie Manigault notched season highs with 17 points and five assists, and junior guard Sam Trunley came off the bench to score 16 points, his fourth-straight double-figure scoring effort and fifth overall this season.
Senior forward Ian Elam added five points, eight rebounds, and a pair of blocks off the bench for CWRU.
The Spartans never trailed in the first half of the game and led by as many as 13 points after scoring eight-straight points, capped off by a jumper from Kahl that put CWRU in front 30-17 with 8:38 to play in the half. Hiram climbed back into the game, cutting the lead to as few as two points, as the Spartans went on to take a 43-40 lead into halftime.
Hiram connected on the first two baskets of the second half to take their first lead of the game within the first minute of the frame. Kahl answered with baskets of his own on back-to-back possessions to give the Spartans the lead back, 47-44 with 18:33 to play. The Terriers regained the lead briefly with 17:14 to play, but Mazzeo answered with a three-pointer 11 seconds later to put CWRU in front 50-48, and the Spartans never trailed again in the game.
CWRU went on a 15-4 run later in the period, taking a 14-point lead, 76-62, on a three from Manigault with 10:16 remaining. Hiram trimmed the lead back to single digits by the 8:15 mark, but the Spartans once again built on their advantage and took a game-high 16-point advantage, 97-81, with two free throws by Trunley with 2:48 remaining. The Terriers once again pulled within 10 points in the final minute, but CWRU was able to hold on for the nine-point win.
Monday's game marked the third time this season that the Spartans have scored at least 100 points in a game and matched the team's 104-73 win over Pitt.-Bradford on November 10 for the most points scored in a game this season.
CWRU finished the game shooting a season-high 58.1% (36-62) overall, including a blistering 69.0% (20-29) in the second half, during which the team connected on six-of-11 (54.5%) three-point attempts.
The Spartans will continue their stretch of six-straight games away from home on Sunday when the team travels to Richmond, Indiana to face Earlham College at 2:00 p.m.
