Troy, NY – Grad student Ryan Miles-Ferguson tied his season and career-high with 27 points as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team picked up its second win of the weekend, a 64-60 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights are off to a 2-0 start in Liberty League play for the first time since the 2014-15 season, improving to 6-1 overall, while the Engineers fell to 3-4 and 1-1. Clarkson looks to remain among the conference's unbeaten teams when it heads to Canton on Wednesday to face St. Lawrence University.
For the first time all season, the Knights' offense was held in check in the first half. Clarkson got off to a decent start with 11 points in the first seven-plus minutes, capped by a Frankie Rainville 3-pointer at 12:36, but the Knights were held without a field goal for the next eight minutes until Ryan Miles-Ferguson converted inside to put the score at 18-16 in favor of RPI. The Engineers pushed the margin to six with a little over two minutes to go, only to see 3-pointers from Matteo Sinon and Ryan Miles-Ferguson fall in the next minute to tie the score. On the final possession of the half for Clarkson, Sinon scored on a layup to allow Clarkson to take a slim 25-23 advantage into the locker room. Both teams struggled in the first 20 minutes, as each team shot below 30% from the floor.
RPI regained the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but Ryan Miles-Ferguson took over near the midway point of the half with nine straight points for Clarkson, giving the Knights the lead. Clarkson would expand its edge to as many as seven points. The Engineers were not done, though, edging back up by one on a 3-pointer from Jonny Angbazo. After both teams came up empty on their next possessions, Ryan Miles-Ferguson picked up a defensive rebound in the paint and took the ball coast-to-coast, finishing with a left hand while going 1-on-4 in transition to put the Knights back up by a point. The next time down the court for the Knights, Jack Dalgety buried a 3-pointer from the corner for a four-point lead with 1:12 to go, and Clarkson held on from there.
Miles-Ferguson was once again efficient in his scoring, shooting 10-for-17 from the floor with four 3-pointers for his game-high 27 points. Jack Dalgety added a significant double-double thanks to 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Braeden Burns finished in double figures with 10 points.
For the Engineers, Avery Eugster scored 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting. The Knights held the conference's leading scorer, Jonny Angbazo to eight points on 2-for-11 shooting.
