Men’s Basketball Comes Up Just Short Against Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite a Plattsburgh career-high 22 points from Willard Anderson Jr. (Buffalo, N.Y. / East), with his college career high being 27 points, Plattsburgh State men's basketball team falls in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) gameplay. Anderson Jr. tied as the game-leading scorer with 22 points, and he also added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. 
 
Other top scorers for the Cardinals included Dylan Trombley (Moriah, N.Y. / Moriah) and Sasha Vidrini (Trieste, Italy / Liceo Rogazionisti) who respectively had 17 and 13 points. Trombley led all players in rebounds with eight. Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) also contributed to the overall effort as he had 11 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. 
 
For the Red Dragons Aaron Coston and Jaylen Warmack both had 22 points and seven rebounds. Kendall Arcuri was also a part of the winning effort as he had eight points, seven rebounds, and five assists. 
 
Cortland shot the ball extremely well as they shot 54.7% from the floor while Plattsburgh shot a solid 42.9% from the floor. Plattsburgh won the turnover battle 11-16 as they got 23 points off turnovers compared to Cortland's 11 while Cortland had the rebounding edge 34-29.
 
Plattsburgh falls to 2-4 overall (0-1 SUNYAC) and will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 2 at 4 pm as they conclude their weekend play with another road SUNYAC matchup game this time against Oswego St. Cortland rises to 3-2 overall (1-0 SUNYAC) and will be back in action Saturday, Dec. 2 at 4 pm as they continue SUNYAC play with a matchup against Potsdam. 
 
The game saw each team complete double-digit deficit comebacks and was within a couple of possessions at the finish. Warmack started the game with a jumper and then followed that up with a three and a layup. Coston added to the opening scoring with a layup as the Red Dragons scored nine straight points that prompted a Cardinal timeout at the 17:34 mark. Tabb got the Cardinals on the board with a layup that made the score 11-2 Red Dragons with a little over 15 minutes to play. Anderson Jr. scored five straight points that made the score 15-10 Red Dragons. With a little over 12 minutes to play Vidrini made a three that made the score 18-16 Red Dragons. Anderson Jr. made a three that tied the game 19-19 followed by a layup from Vidrini that gave the Cardinals their first lead 21-19 with a little over 10 minutes to play. The Cardinals scored five straight points that added to their lead and made the score 24-19. The last six minutes of the first half saw multiple exchanges of buckets as Coston closed the quarter with a layup that made the score 44-35 Cardinals. 
 
Cortland outscored Plattsburgh 43-30 in the second half to complete their comeback after they trailed by double digits. Warmack opened the second half with a layup followed by a three from Anderson Jr. that made the score 47-37 Cardinals. After a 7-0 run, the Cardinals lead 54-37 with less than 17 minutes to play. The Red Dragons did not go away as they went on a 13-0 run that cut the lead to four with less than 15 minutes to play. Vidrini made a jumper to stop the run, but Kareem Lubin followed that up with a three that made the score 56-53 Cardinals with less than 12 minutes to play. With a little over six minutes to play, Coston tied the game 62-62 on a made free throw. Coston followed that up with a layup that gave the Red Dragons the lead 64-62 with less than five minutes to play. The Red Dragons scored four straight points and Anderson Jr. followed that up with a layup that made the score 68-64 Red Dragons. With less than two minutes to play, Trombley cut the lead to one after he made two free throws but Danny Linehan made a three that made the score 72-68 Red Dragons. With a little over a minute remaining in the game, Franklin Infante (East Rockaway, N.Y. / East Rockaway) made a layup that cut the lead to two, but Coston responded with a layup of his own that made the score 74-70. With less than 30 seconds Trombley made a clutch turn-around jumper that cut the lead to two again, but the Red Dragons responded again and made the score 76-72. Tabb made two free throws to cut the lead to two again, but the Cardinals fell short as they lost 78-74.
