DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont men's basketball team earned another victory to move to 6-1 on the season with an 84-65 win over Millsaps Friday. The 6-1 start for Piedmont is the best start in the NCAA era for the Lions.
It was a complete team effort as four Lions were in double figures on offense led by Ryan Jolly's 15 points. Fisher Darden added 14 while Devin Dean had a season-high 13 points.
Piedmont controlled the game nearly wire-to-wire trailing by just three points early before taking the lead for good at the 14:17 mark in the first half. It was a low-scoring affair throught the first 10 minutes of play as Piedmont led 17-15, but took a 42-22 lead into the half.
The Lions outscored the Majors 25-7 over the final 10 minutes of the first half including a 14-0 run at one point.
The second half saw the Majors outscore Piedmont 43-42 but it was too little, too late as the Lions rolled to a 19 point win.
Piedmont made the most of opportunities at the free throw line picking up 13 points at the charity stripe while only allowing the Majors to score three points off free throws.
Up next, the Lions will host Brevard on Sunday at 3 p.m. inside Cave Arena.
TURNING POINT:
--A 14-0 run inside the final five minutes of play in the first half proved to be the separator as the Lions never trailed from the 7:57 mark on.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--Joe Helenbrook ended the night with 17 rebounds as he tallied 11 in the first half alone.
--Ryan Jolly led Piedmont with 15 points as four Lions ended the night in double figures.
NEWS AND NOTES:
--This marks the best start in the NCAA Era for the men's basketball team with a 6-1 record.
