Conn College Holds Off Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team held off a second-half charge by Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday night to pick up a 68-58 victory at Roland Hall.

The Camels outscored the Bears 11-2 in the final 2:46 as Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) scored four of his 15 points during the stretch to help sew up the victory. RJ Casey (Brentwood, Tenn.) led all scorers with 19 points while David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The opening minutes featured four lead changes and two ties before the Camels pulled in front behind a 10-0 run. Murray provided a pair of buckets during the stretch, which was punctuated by an Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) three-pointer with 8:08 left in the half that gave Conn a 19-11 advantage.

The Camels closed the half strong, building the lead to 31-19 behind a layup from Casey and two baskets from Schainfeld. Conn shot 43 percent in the stanza and forced eight CGA turnovers, and Casey netted nine points to lead all scorers at the break.

The Bears used a 9-2 start to the second half to claw back into the game, with all nine points coming from beyond the arc. Coast Guard then kept within striking distance over the next 14 minutes, keeping things uncomfortable for the visitors.

Clinging to a 57-56 lead with three minutes to go, Conn got big plays from its veterans in crunch time. Murray provided some breathing room with a basket in the paint, and moments later he came up with a clutch steal on the defensive end following a Coast Guard offensive rebound. On the ensuing trip down the floor, Murray followed up a teammate's miss for an easy put-back to extend the margin to 61-56 with 1:34 left.

In the final minute, Casey drove the lane and found Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) for another easy bucket. Schainfeld then took care of the rest from the free throw line, cashing in on four freebies to wrap up the victory.

The Camels, who remained unbeaten on the road, picked up their fourth-straight win over their New London neighbor. Jordan Frazer paced Coast Guard (4-2 overall) with 13 points while Mitch Shettles added 11.

Conn (5-1 overall) will next host NYU on Saturday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m.
