Men’s Basketball High Scoring Night Propelled Them to a Dominant Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A hot first half for Kevin Tabb (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Thomas Jefferson) pushed the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team to a 102-75 win over Vermont State University Lyndon. Tabb collected 20 first-half points on 50.0% shooting and ended the night with 31 points on 50.0% shooting. Tabb also registered six rebounds and six steals. 
 
Other top scorers for the Cardinals were Franklin Infante (East Rockaway, N.Y. / East Rockaway) with 17 points and Willard Anderson Jr. (Buffalo, N.Y. / East) with 10 points. Other scorers for the Cardinals were Sasha Vidrini (Trieste, Italy / Liceo Rogazionisti), Matt Kone-Bradshaw (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Adams Street Academy), and Ikechukwu Ezike(Brooklyn, N.Y. / Paul Robeson) who all had eight points. Tim Thomas (Manhattan, N.Y. / Commonwealth Academy (Mass.)) and Ezike collected 14 and 10 rebounds respectively. Those 14 rebounds for Thomas led both teams and was a career-high for the graduate student. Thomas and Ezike also contributed in other ways as Thomas added five assists and Ezike added five blocks. 
 
For the Hornets, Gregory Gonyea Jr. led the way with 25 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Owen Traynor also contributed as he had 13 points. 
 
The Cardinals shot 43.6% from the field, while the Hornets weren't far behind as they shot 42.2% from the field. Both teams were efficient when it came to shooting percentage, but the Cardinals won the turnover battle 13-28 which was the difference maker.  Of those 28 turnovers committed by the Hornets, the Cardinals got 32 points from them. 
 
Plattsburgh wins their second game in a row and improves to 2-3 on the season. They will continue their 3-game road trip as they travel to Cortland on Friday, Dec. 1 to take on SUNY Cortland at 7:30 pm in their first SUNYAC conference game of the season. Vermont State University Lyndon falls to 0-6 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 28 as they travel to Norwich University with a tip-off time of 5:30 pm. 
 
The Hornets opened the first half with a driving layup from Mondwell Burke that gave them a 2-0 lead. Tabb started his hot first half right off the back as he got the Cardinals on the board with a driving layup that tied the game 2-2. The Hornets got the lead back with a driving layup from Gonyea Jr. but that would be the last lead they would have. The Cardinals held the lead from the 16:32 minute mark when they got their first lead on a driving layup from Anderson Jr. and held that lead until the end of the first half. After five minutes of play, the Cardinals led 10-5. At the 13:03 minute mark, the Hornets tied the game 14-14 with a layup from Aiden Trapani. Shortly after, Anderson Jr. responded with a layup of his own that gave the Cardinals back the lead 16-14. With less than 10 minutes to play, Vidrini made a three that made the score 21-19 Cardinals. The rest of the half was all Cardinals as they went on an 11-0 run from the 8:07 mark until the 6:54 mark that pushed their lead to twelve. Gonyea stopped the run with a driving layup that made the score 34-24 Cardinals. To close the half, the Cardinals got buckets from Infante and Ezike and went into halftime with a 54-33 lead. 
 
The second half was all Cardinals as they held onto their double-digit lead the entire half. Dylan Trombley (Moriah, N.Y. / Moriah) opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a layup that made the score 56-33 Cardinals. Tabb followed that up with a layup and soon after Gonyea Jr. got the Hornets on the board with a three that made the score 58-36 Cardinals. Traynor followed that up with another three for the Hornets to which Jeremiah Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y. / East New York Family Academy) responded with a layup that made the score 60-39 Cardinals. After five minutes of play, the Cardinals led 66-45. At the 12:31 mark, both teams exchanged buckets as Tavarius Vance made a layup, Tabb a jumper, and GonyeaJr. a layup that made the score 71-49 Cardinals. Under six minutes to play both teams exchanged buckets again as Kone-Bradshaw made a layup, Issac McCann a three, Ankush Malhotra (Long Island, N.Y. / Upper Room Christian School) a layup, and Peyton Olsen a layup that made the score 88-69 Cardinals. The Cardinals held the Hornets scoreless for the last four minutes and got points from Infante, Trombley, Malhotra, and Aidan McGuire (Long Island, N.Y. / Upper Room Christian School) that closed out the game with a score of 102-75 Cardinals.
