William Paterson Men's Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Kean

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (2-3, 0-1 NJAC) fell 71-63 to Kean (2-2, 1-0 NJAC) in its 2023-24 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener Nov. 21 at the Sports and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Kean was efficient from the floor in the first half and buried 10 shots from long range to take a 22-point lead (42-20) into the halftime break.
  • The Cougars maintained their large advantage for most of the second half until a 3-pointer by graduate student MJ Moncrieffe with 5:33 remaining sparked a 15-4 WP run that lasted five minutes and pulled the Pioneers within seven (70-63).
  • However, that would be as close as WP would get as the Cougars limited any further damage en route to earning the conference win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Moncrieffe reached a new career-best scoring mark after tallying a game-high 21 points to pair with a team-best 10 boards for his second consecutive double-double.
  • Senior Shawn Summers Jr. logged 16 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • Junior Andre Wells scored 16 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals.

UP NEXT:

  • William Paterson will head to Jersey City, Wednesday, Nov. 29, for a 7:30 p.m. NJAC game at New Jersey City.
