CNU's Barber Scored Career-High 31 as Captains Edge Johns Hopkins, 75-73

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - You could say that senior All-American Trey Barber has a flare for the dramatic. Barber, who hit the game-winning shot in the National Championship game in the final second vs. Mount Union in March, recorded another game-winner Saturday. His tip-in with two seconds on the clock was the difference as Christopher Newport edged 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 75-73, at the Freeman Center.

Barber, who lodged a career-high 31 points in the victory, was 13-of-17 from the field, posted a team-high seven rebounds, and also recorded three blocks, two assists, and two steals. Following Barber's tip-in, the Blue Jays got off a last-second three-point attempt from junior John Windley that glanced off the side of the rim and the Captains held on for the victory.

"Johns Hopkins is a really good program, and they gave us a tremendous fight today," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "I would say we played our most complete game so far this season, and Trey was a huge part of it. That was a really big win for us over a team that I think is even better than we thought they were."

The Captains and Blue Jays staged an entertaining back-and-forth battle that produced nine lead changes and eight ties in all. CNU held a ten-point edge in the opening half, 27-17, before JHU stormed from behind to claim a 40-35 lead at the half. The Blue Jays went up by as many as eight early in the second half, and the lead exchanged hands five times after the intermission.

Barber, who scored 15 points in the opening half and 16 in the second half, fueled the CNU offensive attack and was joined by freshman Tyson Henderson, who scored all six of his points in the second half. Sophomore Collin Hines, who scored a dozen points, was the only other Captains to reach double digits. Barber surpassed his previous career-high of 29 points set last February in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game vs. Mary Washington in Santa Cruz, Ca.

Freshman guard Brayden Fagbemi led the Blue Jays with 25 points and also recorded eight rebounds. Johns Hopkins, now 2-3, out-rebounded the Captains, 37-32, and was led on the boards by graduate student Sidney Thybulle's ten rebounds. Windley (14) and Carson James (13) also reached double figures in scoring for JHU.

Christopher Newport, now 3-2, will return to action next Saturday, November 25th, hosting Buffalo State in the opening round of the CNU/Holiday Inn Invitational. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
