Hamburg, NY – Freshman Braeden Burns scored 28 points and snagged 16 rebounds as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team outlasted Lancaster Bible College in double overtime of the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament Championship game, 93-91, on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 3-0 while Lancaster Bible fell to 1-1 on the season. Both Burns and Ryan Miles-Ferguson were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Burns had just four of his 28 points in the first half and didn't score until there was 5:10 remaining in the opening half, but his 28 were the most by a Clarkson freshman since Nick Jones scored 32 against Hamilton in the second half of the 2003-04 season.
It didn't appear as if Clarkson would be picking up a tournament win in the early going, as the Chargers rolled out to a 23-13 lead following a layup from Daniel King at 10:49. On Burns' first basket of the game, Clarkson did pull back to within three (30-27) at 5:10, but just three minutes later Lancaster Bible had its biggest lead of the contest when Malachi McDowell converted a layup with a free throw at 1:54. The Knights closed to within eight by the break.
Clarkson continued its comeback early in the second half, tying the game at 44-44 on a Burns layup. Six minutes later, however, the Chargers were up by double figures again when McDowell converted another layup-and-one with just under 10 minutes to go. Clarkson slowly chipped away, but still found itself down by six when Seth Beers scored with 2:30 left. By that point, Clarkson's Ryan Miles-Ferguson had fouled out, and the prospects looked grim for Clarkson, but the defense held the Chargers without a point for the remainder of regulation and tied the game with a little over a minute to go on another layup from Burns.
In the first overtime, Clarkson enjoyed its first lead of the game at the 3:31 mark on a basket by Burns, but the Knights again found themselves trailing just a moment later and needed another bucket from Burns to tie the contest for a second overtime. With players running on fumes, the offenses slowed a bit in the second extra period, but Clarkson got what it needed late. Matteo Sinon hit a pair of free throws with under 30 seconds to go, and Steve DeRegis made another to put Clarkson up by three. A desperation half court heave came up about a foot short as the Knights escaped with the win.
Burns shot 12-for-20 from the floor and had 28 points and 16 rebounds in 44 minutes after scoring seven points in his first two games combined. Jack Dalgety shot 7-for-12 from the field for 17 points and Ryan Miles-Ferguson added 14 points. Sinon also had 10 points and five assists while DeRegis scored nine points with five assists.
For Lancaster Bible, Grant Sareyka scored 22 points, Daniel King had 14 points, and Seth Beers had 13 points, eight rebounds, and 13 assists.
