Gwynedd Mercy Yields to Knights in Battle of 309

Glenside, Pa. - (11/15/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-2) traveled to local rival Arcadia University (3-0) tonight for the annual playing of the Battle of 309; there, the Knights emerged from a 34-34 halftime stalemate for a 10-point edge, 48-38 (16:27), early in the second half. Arcadia University's lead fluctuated but always remained as the Griffins cut the deficit to as few as three points (51-48, 13:40) and trailed by as many as 15 points (72-57, 4:41) in an eventual 80-74 conclusion. The Gwynedd Mercy University bench came up big with three double-digit scorers in a 52-point effort.

Griffin Highlights

  • A three-point basket from sophomore guard Devin Benson (Williamstown, N.J.) grabbed Gwynedd Mercy University a 27-26 (3:57) lead just past the four-minute mark of the first half and another Benson three made the Red and Gold advantage six points, 32-26, with 2:46 remaining.
  • Benson also found junior Christion Johnson (Middletown, Del.) for a bucket that narrowed the Knights' lead to three points, 53-50, with 13:07 left in the affair.
  • The Griffins shot well from the line as six contributed to a 14-of-17 (82.4%) free throw performance.
  • Rebounds were even at 42-42 and Gwynedd Mercy University was more careful with the ball as owners of a 10-12 turnovers spread.
  • Off the Gwynedd Mercy University bench, junior guard Aquil Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) and senior guard JoHaan Vinson (Philadelphia, Pa.) each scored 15 points, while Benson recorded a dozen (12).
  • Stewart and Vinson were two of three Griffins to record five rebounds in a very balanced team effort, while Benson provided a team-high three assists.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Griffin Complex on Tuesday, November 21, when they host Delaware Valley University for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
