NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester University men's basketball team fell to the visiting Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers in overtime on Wednesday, February 8. Rose-Hulman took Wednesday night's game by a final score of 93-92.
The Spartans and Fightin' Engineers battled back-and-forth in the first seven minutes of Wednesday's night game, tying the game up at 10 with 13:18 on the clock. Manchester retook the lead, shooting 10-18 in the opening half to take the 16-point lead at halftime.
Rose-Hulman answered and cut the lead to five thanks to a 14-3 run to begin the second half of play. The Fightin' Engineers would tie the game up at 60 with 7:34 left to play in regulation. The rest of the second half would be played within one possession as the two teams continued to put-up a hard-fought battle. The Spartans would tie the game up at 77 and again at 79 thanks to a made jump shot by Zach Sawyer (Columbus, Ohio, Bishop Watterson) with less than 20 seconds left on the clock. A missed free-throw would give Rose-Hulman another chance, but a turnover by the Fightin' Engineers would send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Manchester and Rose-Hulman continued their back-and-forth battle, tying the game up at 86 with just over a minute left to play. The Fightin' Engineers would hang on to win Wednesday night's game by a final score of 93-92.
Bradley Harden led the Fightin' Engineers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Willie Bowman and Kobe Stoudemire each added 20 points for Rose-Hulman, while Miles McGowen finished the night with 18 points. Simon Blair also added 10 rebounds for the Fightin' Engineers. As a team, Rose-Hulman shot 44.6% (33-74) from the field, 40.0% (14-35) from three-point range, and 86.7% (13-15) from the free throw line. The Fightin' Engineers improved to 13-9, 10-5 HCAC with the win.
Zach Sawyer led the Spartans with 29 points and 1 block during Wednesday night's game. Logan Willoughby (Greenwood, Ind., Whiteland Community) added 18 points for the Black and Gold, while Bryant Smith (West Lafayette, Ind., Harrison), Quentez Columbus (South Bend, Ind., Adams), and Ty Lynas (Crawfordsville, Ind., Crawfordsville) tallied 11 points apiece for MU. Columbus also finished the night with a team-high 7 rebounds. As a team, Manchester shot 46.3% (31-67), 42.9% (15-35), and 75.0% (15-20) from the free throw line. Manchester fell to 13-9, 11-4 HCAC following Wednesday night's loss.
Up next, Manchester men's and women's basketball teams will host Hanover College during Senior Day in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena. The men's team will tip-off first against the Panthers at 2:00 with the women to follow at 4:00 p.m.
