13th ranked Quakers stun 20th ranked Tigers at the Buzzer

More news about: Guilford

Trailing by 16 with 4:35 left in regulation, the Guilford men's basketball program rallied as Jorden Davis nailed a three at the buzzer to complete the comeback. With the 70-69 win, the Quakers advance to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship.

Coming out of halftime, the two two teams traded three-point shots then a layup by Julius Burch evened the game at 27. From there, the Tigers scored 10 of the next 12 points to go ahead 37-29 and force a Guilford timeout with 13:42 remaining in regulation.

Hampden-Sydney began to slowly extend its advantage with six-consecutive points but Elijah Bowens halted the run with a three and a pull up jumper to get the Quakers within eight, 45-37.

Unfortunately, the Tigers sharp shooting continued as they made five of their next seven shots including 4-4 from three to increase the advantage to 16, 59-43.

At this point, Guilford started to show its offensive display. Over the next 2:17, the team went 4-6 from the field on a 13-4 run capped off by a three from Tyler Dearman to make the difference only nine points, 63-56.

With only 39 seconds left, Hampden-Sydney made a free throw to hold a 68-60 lead but here came the Quakers. Bowens knocked down a jumper and a three to make it a three-point game. Another Tiger free throw extended it back to four but Luke Proctor sank two free throws to make it a one possession contest.

A foul on the ensuing inbounds, sent Hampden-Sydney to the line for two. The Tigers missed both shots as Proctor pulled down the rebound and started his way up court. The sophomore guard found Davis on the left wing who fired off a shot with thousands of a second left. As the horn sounded with the shot in the air, the ball banked off the backboard and in to complete the thrilling victory.

Down the final three minutes of the game, Bowens scored 11 of his 17 points coming off the bench. Dearman led the Quakers with 20 total points while Burch grabbed a game-leading 14 rebounds.

Guilford will face the top-seeded and second-ranked Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Championship on Sunday, February 26 at the Salem Civic Center. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
